            THE LORD'S COMING,



                              (Continued from last issue. )

 THE  Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, with His

       mighty angels, inflaming fire, taking vengeance on them

that know not God and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus

Christ, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from

the  presence of the Lord and from the  glory of His power. "

 2 Thess 1, 7-9.

  We  may  now speak a little about the other side of the Lord's

Coming: that is to say, His coming in judgment.

  How  solemnly are the warnings of the word of God told out

yet, how little are they heeded!

  God  is long suffering, not willing that any should perish; be-

cause of this men do not believe that He will call them to account

at all. " Because sentence against an evil work is not executed

speedily therefore the hearts of the sons of men is fully set in them

to do evil. "  Eccles. 8, 11.

  So it has been with the British law, in connexion with some

notable Maoris. For  a long time they were guilty under that

law, but the British did not wish to put the law into force: —but

at last there was an end of this long-suffering, and the law was

enforced and these Maoris declared bankrupt.

  God  will also enforce every jot and tittle of His word in its

time. Oh, be warned ! The Lord IS coming to judge the living

nations upon earth !

     What  happens  after God's children are gone ?

  When  the saints are caught away by the unseen power of God,

as we saw in our last, then will come a short period of time when

men  will think they are to get things after their own mind, and

that the " good time, " as they speak, is coming; but during this

time things will be ripening for judgment.

   Left without God and His people, and under the influence of

Satan in a much more powerful way than before, wickedness will

spring up rapidly and come to a head under  the devil's man,

 The Antichrist. " Woe  to the inhabiters of the earth...... for the

devil is come down  unto you having great wrath, because he

knoweth  that he hath but a short time. "—Rev. 12, 12.

   Then when all is ready, and man thinks he is just about to

 have everything his own way; when all things seem to indicate

 he has just reached the end he has in view; then,

                The heavens  are opened,

 and the rejected, despised, and hated Jesus shall appear, seated

 upon a white horse, and his name as given of God, ' Faithful and

 True, ' to judge and make war  in righteousness, (see Rev. 19,

 11 to end. )

   This scripture and the  one at  the head of our paper run

 together. It is at this time that the Lord Jesus will be revealed

 from heaven in flaming fire, to execute judgment upon the living

 nations. His  mighty angels will be with Him as seen in 2 Thes.

 1, and the saints which have been caught up to heaven, as seen

 in Rev. 19.

          A  grand, heavenly, military procession,

   Coming in the calm dignity of almighty power in flaming fire,

 taking vengeance, —to execute judgment, and make  war  in

 righteousness.

   Who   are the subjects of this vengeance 1 This righteous judg-

 ment ?  Two classes are mentioned in 2 Thes. 1, 8.

    1. Taking vengeance  on those who know  not God

  All those who have refused the testimony given in such abun-

dance to the true God, and have bowed known  to those, who,

though they be called gods, are no gods, —for there is but One.

Satan has taken advantage of the religious sentiment of man, and

has become the object of worship in the hearts of the mass of

mankind. They do not know God, whatever else they may know.

  Such  was the Maori nation before the truths of Christianity

were sounded out amongst them. But it would be well for our

Maori  friends to distinguish between these truths, and the civil-

ization which has gone hand in hand  with  it. Civilization has

lifted the race out of barbarism, and Christianity has brought the

true knowledge of Christ Jesus as Saviour, to many individuals

of the race. Yet if there still be those amongst them who know

not God, such will be the subjects of divine judgments when the

Lord Jesus Christ shall appear.

2, Those who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

are also the subjects of this vengeance. Now this testimony has

been  sounded forth among  the  Maoris, whatever the defects,

through the human agents. God  has been gracious, and at the

end  of the days, and just before the door of mercy is closed, this

grace  of salvation through  faith of Christ Jesus  is preached

among them.

                  Who  will obey it ?

   It is preached for the obedience of faith among all nations,

 and now  in God's providence it has reached you. Every true

 believer in the blessed Lord Jesus is saved, His precious blood

 cleansing from all sin. But they who obey not  this gospel are

 the subjects of judgment. So that in one way or another, every

 unsaved Maori will be brought in guilty when the Lord comes in

judgment.

             What will become of them?

   They  " shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the

 presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power. "

   No appeal from that judgment. No escape from those eyes as

 a flame of fire. All shall be discerned ! All at last condemned !

 All self-convicted ! No quaking earth: no rending rocks shall

 hide from the wrath of the Lamb. Mercy despised. Opportunities

 lost; long suffering sinned away. What will anyone have to say

 against this manifestly righteous judgment 1

              But yet a little while remains,

 even if but the moment you read these lines. Dear Maori friend

 own  that you are  righteously the subject of this judgment.

       WHAT ABOUT THE OLD ONES?

GOOD   morning: I heard that you wanted to see me, so I

     have come to pay you a visit. "

     " Thank you, sir. The fact is, the other evening I went to

to hear the gospel preaching at the Tent, and ever since then I

have been miserable. I want to get to heaven, but I don't seem

to see the way clear. That is why I wanted a talk with you "

  "Well, James, if you want to be saved, and get to heaven it

is pretty clear that something must be done. You have committed

many  sins, and those sins must be wiped out before you can

enter heaven. "

  " Yes, I know that. My past life has not been what it ought

to have been, but I do feel that I should like to mend my ways

and turn over a new leaf. "                           

   " But stay. Of  course it is right that you should seek in

every way to do that which is good, hut turning over a new leaf

will not blot out the old one! The Bible says



          ' God requireth that which  is past, '

  You  may try to turn over a new leaf, but what about the past

leaves 1 They  are still there. Good actions in the future cannot

wipe out bad deeds in the past. "

  " That is what puzzles me, sir. I have always thought that if

a man  did his best to lead a good  life, nothing else could be

required of him. "

  " Why James, if from this moment to your dying day, you

were able to live a life as holy and as free from blame as the life

which  the angels in heaven lead, that would not put away a

single one of your sins. Not one !

  " Well, I am truly sorry for my sins. I often mourn over them

and resolve to commit no more. "

  " I dare say you  do, but mourning and  resolving are both

powerless to wipe out the past. Now, look here. Suppose you

get  into debt at the grocer's shop, so deeply that  he will no

longer give you credit, but threatens to summons you for what

you owe him. What should you do ?"

   " I should have to think it over. "

  " Well, suppose that while you are thinking it over, a thought

flashes into your mind. ' Wife !' you exclaim, where's my hat 1

I'm going down to see the grocer. ' So you put on your hat, and

 n a few moments you reach the shop.

  " The grocer greets you with a bow and a smile. ' Glad to see

you, sir, ' he says, ' I suppose you have come

            to settle that account  of mine'

   " ' Well, not exactly that, ' you reply, ' but I have come to tell

you two things. First, that I truly mourn  and grieve that I

have got so deeply into your debt, and that I am unable to pay

you. Secondly, that I am resolved that from this time forward

I will do better. Every pound of tea that I receive across your

counter, every pound of sugar, and every article that I buy at

your shop I will pay for there and then upon the spot. ' What

do you think the grocer would say to you?"

  " Why, he would laugh at me. "

  " Yes; and he would tell you that neither sorrow for the past,

nor prompt payments for goods purchased in the future, can wipe

out the old score, nor pay the debt that already stands against

your name. "

  " Then do not hope to satisfy God by turning over a new leaf.

No, no ! Turn over some of the old leaves, James. Think about

your past sins. Think of them in view of that meeting between

you and God  that must take place. "

                 

  Is the reader one of those, who is trying to get to heaven by

turning over a new leaf, and seeking to live a better life 1 If so,

my  friend, you are on  the wrong  track altogether. You are

leaving the old leaves and the past life out of your accounts !

   If you are to get to heaven something must be done to wipe out

the past.

  " But" you say, " what is the ' something' that must be done?"

  Mark  the answer ! It is something that you cannot do.

   But listen! God  tells us, in the sweet story of the gospel that

the very thing, that must be done before you can be saved,

                has been done already!

Done by one whom  God sent into the world on purpose to do it!

Done as God would have it done ! Done for sinners !

   Who has done it 1 Jesus.

   Where did He no it 1 On the Cross of Calvary.

   What is it that He has done 1 He has done a mighty work,

which has brought such glory to God that now He can write the

word   " Paid " across the old debt, and the word " Forgiven "

across the past life.

  Yes; instead of our having to turn over a new leaf, and " do

our best" in order to get to heaven, we have just to come as poor

lost, ruined sinners, and rest upon the firm foundation of the

finished work of Christ.

  My  reader, is that where you are resting? "Verily, verily, I

say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him

that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into con-

demnation; but is passed from death unto life. " John o. 24.

                    DON'T.



"DON'T!"   was the  title of an address to be  given in

      B ——one   Sunday afternoon.

   What  was said upon this subject I know not, but I would

repeat the word and say through this printed page, " Don't" put

oft your soul's salvation, "don't !'' for " How shall we escape, if

we  neglect so great salvation T Heb. 2. 3.

   Did you ever think of how soon this day of salvation may be

for ever past and gone 1 How awful it would be to miss God's

 wonderful gift!

   Now  it is offered so  freely, and offered to you. Why  not

 accept it 1

   Four times over in the book of God are the words, " To-day if

ye will hear His voice, harden not your heart. " Then why not

 obey ?

        WHAT THINK YE OF CHRIST?

                   (MATTHEW 22, 42. )

 THE    old, old question which has been ringing out over this

  \_   world for now more than  eighteen hundred years—once

 God's question to the world—is now God's question to you. The

 world gave its answer at the cross. God is waiting for yours.

   Sinners!  What  think YE of Christ? He  died for sinners—

 for His  enemies— for His  murderers. Think  of  Him—the

 Stranger from Heaven —who sat on the; well at Sychar and offer-

 ed to that thirsty soul the living water. Think of Him—the Son

 of God—who  said to the wretched woman of Nain, "Thy sins be

 forgiven thee. " Think of Him—the King of Kings—who  stood

 crowned with a crown of thorns and robed in u purple robe, on

 the steps of the Pretorium, at Jerusalem, rejected by His own,

Think of Him—the   Lord of glory—crucified between two thieves,

scoffed at and derided by those He came to save, praying for His

murderers. Think of Him—the  Spotless One—forsaken by God

because He was bearing the sinner's sins. Yes, and think of Him

too who will one day sit on that Great White  Throne as the

Judge from whose face the earth and the heaven shall flee away.

What  think ye of CHRIST 1 Is He anything to you?

  Christians, what think YE of  Christ ? Your Saviour, your

great High Priest, your Advocate, your Lord. Think of Him

who bore your sins in His own body on the tree. Think of Him

—the  Man in the Glory—who   ever liveth to make intercession

for us. Think  of Him on His Father's throne, patiently waiting

for the moment when He shall descend into the air and call His

own to be with Him. Think of Him with whom we shall dwell

throughout eternity. Think of  Him  who  alone can satisfy the

hearts of His people down here. What think ye of CHRIST 1 Is

           A WONDERFUL  GIRL

YES, certainly she was remarkable, if her statements had been

 \_    true. Alas ! like thousands of others, she was grossly de"

ceiving herself. A bitter disappointment is in store for her when

at last she really learns the truth about herself.

  It was at the close of a gospel service that I became acquainted

with  her, and, entering  into conversation, discovered how

exceptional a child she believed herself to be.

  " Do you ever trouble about your sins ?"—" No !"

  " Have you ever been troubled about them ?"—" No i"

  " Are you not a sinner, then ?"—" No! "

  "Then, has God made  a mistake, my child ? He  has said,

' There is no difference: for all have sinned. "'—Romans 3.

  But  it was  without apparent effect: the child was so well

satisfied with her own self-righteousness, that the truth of God

failed to awaken her.

   " You'll never get to heaven, my child, " I said, as I left her,

" It is only sinners who reach that home—sinners whose sins

have been washed away  by the precious blood of Christ. "

  How  little is the word of God believed !

  All have Sinned. —Have you believed it ? Have you taken it

up  as a persona] thing, and cried. " I have sinned. " None

are excepted. "There is none that doeth good, no not one'
