    THE  WRECK OF THE

         "WAIRARAPA. "



             A BIG MISTAKE.

 " IT was a big Mistake. "

              

   Such  was the exclamation of a Maori

 fellow passenger, as we stood together on the

 deck of one of the Union steamers, one fine

 calm  morning, passing the western end of

 the Great Barrier Island. On  the outer side

 of  this Island  near  Miner's Head, the

  "Wairarapa"   then  lay  a  total  wreck.

 The  sad remembrance that some hundred

 and  twenty souls came to an untimely end

 by the disaster, gave emphasis to the above

 remark: —" It WAS   a big mistake. "

    But how did it occur 1

   A  fog had settled down over the doomed

  vessel, as she sped along the coast much

  faster than was calculated, accelerated by a

  current, the existence of which was not taken

  into consideration.

    A fog of another kind had settled down

 upon  the mind of the Captain; who, forget-

  ting his usual  caution, kept recklessly on;

  heedless of the suggestions of his officers,

and the fears of the passengers.

  On, and on, and on they sped, not knowing

where they were, until the crash came, and

the fine vessel, with her bows stove in by

the impact  with the cliff, lay high upon a

 ledge of rocks, a hopeless wreck.

   Then  death did its horrid work. Men,

women, and little children were swept into

the swirl and eddy of the mighty waters, as

they raved and dashed upon wreck and rock.

   The despairing cries of human beings, and

 the shrieking of the  horses, now mingled

 with the roaring of the wind, and the boom-

 ing of the breakers. But all avails nothing.

 For by inexorable laws their down is irrevoc-

 ably fixed. And  amid  a horrible melee of

 wreckage and cargo, they, who hoped in a, few

 hours to be landed in safety, were hurried

 into eternity.

          HOW  IS DEATH MET?

   How  differently they met death! Some

 with heroic fortitude; some with  noble self

 sacrifice; some with Christian triumph, re-

 joicing in the victory of Him   who  had

 overcome death for them. Some with craven

 fear, their consciences making cowards of

them; some, perchance, with oaths and curses.

   They had  trusted to the last, a captain,

who had proved himself incompetent to meet

the unusual character of the difficulties, and

powerless to save, when the crash came; and

who recorded his own impotence by that last

terrible dive from the bridge.

  Ours is not to enquire into, or to fix blame

upon anyone; this has been fully done; but

we would here give honour to whom honour

is due. The bravery of some of the officers and

passengers; the noble performance of duty

and self sacrifice of some of the stewards and

stewardesses; and the  kind hearted help

brought  at  considerable risk and loss to

themselves, by the Maoris who lived on the

 Island, and devoted all they had to the help

 of the suffering survivors, is deserving of all

 praise.

                THE SHIP.

   But is not this voyage of the " Wairarapa "

 a picture of the voyage of life that myriads

 of human beings, Pakehas and Maoris are

 now making ? I would say a word to my

 Maori friends about this.

   In this case the Ship is the world. The

 captain is the devil.

   Oh, No ! No ! An old Maori may say,

 surely the devil is not the captain  of this

 world, this beautiful New Zealand of ours.

   But Scripture says, Oh, Yes! Yes! And

 Scripture  is true.

    Adam  deliberately chose the devil as his

 captain, when he disobeyed the Word of God

  and partook of the bait the devil held out

 to him.

    The whole world, Jew and Gentile, deliber-

  ately chose  the devil as its captain; when,

  following his lead, they murdered the Son of

  God, and cast Him out.

    The  devil is called " The prince of this

  world" in John 12; 31, and 14; 30.

    He  and his legions are called " the rulers

  of the darkness of this world " in Eph 6; 12.

  How  dark a place is this world.

    He  is called " the God of this world" in

  2 Cor. 4; 4.

    He   is said to take men  captive in his

   snare, at, or for his will, in 2 Tim. 2; 26.

                THE CAPTAIN.

     If then  he  is called the prince of this

   world; and the god of this world; is it too

   muck to  liken him to the captain of this

world, Looking at the world as a ship?

  But the ship is on a voyage and nears the

land. Lights there are, ' and beacons, and

landmarks about, but a fog has settled down

over all. The passengers do not know where

they are. Does not the captain know 1

  Ah, Yes!  He  knows. He is old, and

wily, and experienced. But he is in heart a

wrecker. His business is to wreck the fairest

outcome of Gods creation. To lead damned

souls to hell.

   The devil, the  god of this world, hath

blinded the minds of them that believe not

lest the light of the gospel of the glory of

 Christ should shine upon them. And this is

like the fog that deceived the Captain.

         THE END DRAWS NEAR.

   The ship nears the end of its journey; but

 it knows it not.

   There are  rocks ahead; the rocks of

 eternal judgment. The world is heedless.

   The swirl of God's wrath, will sweep them

 into the abyss of the damned. The world is

 oblivious. It is unbelieving. It will be so,

 until its unavailing shrieks declare that God's

 Word  is irrevocable. They know  then be-

 cause they see. Unbelief is gone  for ever.

 They are LOST.

   But as yet, on, on, they speed. They are

 merry!  They dance ! They drink ! They

 gamble!   As of old they praise the gods of

 gold, of silver, and of iron; which  neither

 can  see, nor hear, nor help. They  have

  implicit confidence in their chosen captain.

  They are deceived. They are doomed.

    Individual souls are  led on  daily thus,

  and daily wrecked. They  pass into  the

  world of spirits, to await the final judgment

  Lost; doomed; and in despair.

    But the  final crash is coming. The

  besotted old world draws near the execution

  of the sentence passed upon it at the cross.

  " Now is the judgment of this world; now

  shall the prince of this world be  cast out. "

  When  this comes to pass, a dive by the cun-

  ning old captain, leaves them to their fate.

    Powerful  to deceive, he is powerless to

  help.

              CHRIST IS COMING.

    Christ is coming. Coming in flaming fire,

  to take vengeance!

                      TE HOA MAORI.

  The  impact of His coming, Who is the

rock of ages, will shatter the world for ever.

  He  who  was cast out by the world; is

coming to judge the world.

  He  who allowed Himself in weakness, to

be nailed to the cross, that He might save

all who accept Him as Saviour; is coming in

omnipotent power as judge.

  Where    are you  with  reference to  this

coming, my Maori friend 1

  All who  are saved by Him, shall have

their  portion with  Himself  for ever, in

heaven.

   All who are of the world, shall have their

portion with the devil and his angels, in the

lake of fire; this is the second death.

  This is my word to you my Maori friends.

Let  it not be said of you at the last;

    "IT WAS  A BIG MISTAKE., '

 THE  TWO  RESURRECTIONS.

 " The hour is coming in the which all that are

     in their graves shall hear His voice, and

    shall come forth; they that have  done

     good, unto the resurection of life; and they

     that have done evil, unto the resurection

     of damnation. "—John 5; 28-29.



            LIFE OR JUDGMENT.

 IN   this chapter the Lord  Jesus Christ

 states that every man must receive at

 His hands, one of two things. Life; or

 Judgment. Which shall it be for my Maori

 friends 1

   The  necessity for this is that man had

 sinned and fallen, and forfeited his life, and

 was awaiting the Judgment of God.

   Christ came  into this world, the Son of

 God, making alive whom He would;. that is,

 all who heard His word and believed on Him

 that sent Him. Of such He says, they have

 eternal life, and shall not come into judgment.

 v 24. Thus  such as hear His voice, though

 dead v  25, obtain life and escape judgment.

   On the other hand He says, The Father

 hath committed all judgment unto the Son,

 that all men should honour the Son even as

 they honour  the Father v  22-23. And

 hath given Him  authority to execute judg-

ment also because He is the Son of Man v 27.

  He, the Son of Man, came then, quicken-

ing dead souls; and leaving the unbelieving

to  the execution of  the sentence already

passed upon them; they being judged already,

because they did not believe on Him (c 3; 18).

  He did not come about judgment at that

time. He will come in flaming fire taking

vengeance. 2 Thess. 1; 7-10.

   During these eighteen hundred years, the

bodies  of  those whose   spirits have been

quickened, have died  and  been buried, as

well as those of the unsaved.

   Therefore Christ will also quicken  dead

bodies, as our verse says, and so carry on the

work He  has commenced to a final issue.

   Hence we have in this verse so long quoted

to prove one general resurrection, the distinct

statement that there will be TWO.

   Let  it be noted  that this verse refers to

 resurrection; which is not the same thing as

judgment. Resurrection is not judgment to

 all, and there is the judgment of the living,

 into which no question of resurrection enters.

    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES  OP  THE

              RESURRECTION.

   Our verse then affirms two resurrections,

 and these are distinguished in every way

 from each other.

   1. The  one, is the resurrection of life—

 John 5; 29.

   2. The other, is the resurrection of judg-

 ment—John  5; 29.

   1. The one, is the resurrection of the just

 —Luke  14; 14.

   2. The other, is the resurrection of the un-

 just—Acts  24; 15.

   1. The one, is the resurrection out from

 among the dead—Acts 4; 2.

   2, The  other  is the resurrection of. the

 dead—Acts 23; 6.

   1. The one, is the first resurrection—Rev.

 20; o & 14.

   2. The  issue of the other, is the second

 death—Rev. 20; 5 & 14,

   1. The one, is before Christ's reign of a

 thousand years—Rev. 20; 6.

. 2. The other, is after Christ's reign of a

 thousand years—Rev. 20; 5.

   So that one thousand  years  at  least.

 elapses between the two.

       THE  RESURRECTION OF LIFE.

  We  will now briefly glance at some of the

features of the first, and then at those of the

second.

  It is called the first resurrection. Of this,

Christ is the first fruits. (1 Cor. 15; 23).

The next thing is the harvest, which will be

at Christ's coming. Then they that are His

shall be raised.

  This  agrees with two  other statements

above made and shews: —

  1. The character of those who partake in

it. They are His. It is the resurrection of

the just.

   2. The time of this resurrection. It is at

His coming for His Own, which is before the

millennium; as they are to reign with Him

during the millennium.

   From  this also it is evident it is a resur-

rection from among  the dead. They  that

are His only being raised. The rest of  the

dead  lived not again  until the thousand

 years were finished. —Rev. 20; 5.

  Further   it is  a  resurrection   to  life.

 Blessed and holy are they who take part in

 it, they live and reign with Christ a thousand

 years.

   Now  the Jews did not believe in a resur-

rection from the dead and were grieved when

the  apostles preached  it through   Jesus.

—Acts  4; 2. • It indicated nothing but judg

ment for those left behind.

  The  Gentiles did not believe in the resur-

rection of the dead and mocked when they

heard it—Acts 17; 20.

  But  this is as sure as the former, and all

the wicked dead partake of it.

    THE  RESURRECTION OF JUDGMENT.

  From  the above the character and time of

the other resurrection follows, viz.: —

   As to  the time  of it. It is after the

millennium. The rest of the dead lived not

again until the thousand years were finished,

   The  persons raised are  all the  wicked

dead—Rev. 20; 12. It is the resurrection

 of the unjust—Acts 24; 15.

   The character of it is that of judgment—

 John 5; 28. This takes  place before the

 great white Throne—Rev. 20; 11.

   The results of it are, that those who are

 the subjects of this judgment are cast into

 the lake of fire—Rev. 20; 15. This is the

 second death.

   To which of these two resurrections does

 my Maori reader look forward?
