 | WE call the attention of our Maori readers to an Act
i passed by the New Zealand Parliament entitled
" The Census Act, 1877." As our Maori people
may not be aware of such. having been passed or do
not know the object of such Act, we will explain this
 i to them.
i The great nations of the world Lave been in
I the habit of taking the number of the people of
I which their respective nations are composed, in
, ; order that they may learn if the people are
increasing in numbers or otherwise. Also, that
they may know the inhabitants who occupy each
city, town or village, in order that sanitary
 • laws may be passed for the health and good govern-
ment of such in accordance with the number of
 | inhabitants in each. Hence the Act of which we are

now speaking being passed by our Government in
 New Zealand.
This Act says that the number of the people shall
be taken in the month. of April, in the year 1878,
and in April, 1881, and that the census shall be taken
every succeeding five years from the last given date.
The 25th clause of this Act status that the
Governor shall, from time to time, decide how the
census of the Maori people shall be taken.
The European population of New Zealand are to
give all information oa the following points :—House
they live in, names of persons, married or single,
rank or profession, religion or denomination, educated
or not, extent of land owned or occupied, and bow
cultivated, what crops, what cattle owned by,
fowl, &c.
It is not a matter of slight moment that the popu-
lation of any country should be known to those who
arc entrusted by the people to guide the nation.
Agriculture, commerce, and the teaching of all that
knowledge which, exalts a people are concerned iu
the information given by the census papers. The
health and happiness of the people are all to be guided
by the knowledge which, those papers give ; hence we
say that it is a duty the Maori tribes owe to them
selves, that they should at once awake from their
Maori dislike tu have themselves, their lands, cattle,
and occupations known to the whole world We know
that the old proverb used by a stranger when he asks
the name of any person, " I ask because of a want to
know your ancestors," (He kaha ui te kaha) is still
all powerful in the Maori mind, and acts as a preven-
tative to any knowledge of the Maori numerically, but
we wish to see such old Maori ism cast aside. We
tell our people that they must give all infor-
mation asked of them by those appointed by
Government to obtain this information. We ask
how is the Government to know what to do for the
Maori people in n way that will be adequate to
the wants of the Maori tribes if the Government is
ignorant of the number of the people? How is the
Government to know the worth of any request inside
by the Maori people if they arc not aware of the
number from whom the request comes ? How is the
Government to know what laws would be best, or
most suited to the need of tao Maori people if they
are ignorant of the work, agricultural pursuits, or
commercial occupation of the Maori people. We say
it is the duty of each chief of u hapu, with the head
chief of the tribe, to give all the information asked
for by the Government. Not only so, but let all the
Maori tribes iu all New Zealand at once act on our
suggestion, and give the information required, which
act will show to the world that all our professions of
late to the effect that we will not only uphold the laws
of our New Zealand Parliament but also those of our
noble and righteous Queen Victoria.
The Queen of England has not yet seen a list of the
tribes of her Maori people in New Zealand, hence we
say, let the Maori people do this work at once, so
that His Excellency the Governor may be able to say
to our Queen, " The Maori people are so happy in
your good laws that they comply with, them of their
own accord.''
He reihi hoehoe poti, e kiia ana kia tu a te 3O o

hanga mira huri paraoa ma nga iwi Maori o Rotorua.
A riri ana tetahi iwi Maori o reira, a mahia ana e tana
mira.

           TE KAWANATANGA.
E kiia ana (he tito kau pea ai) kua mea te Kawa-
natanga, ka panuitia e ratou nga korero i ia ra,
i ia ra, o nga mahi e mahia ana e te Kawanatanga.
Ko TE WANANGA nei e mea ana, ki te mea ka pono

a Take e tukua kia aia, otira, katia hoki a Take e
whakaae kia tukua aua kaipuke manuwao ma
Ingarangi.

              INGARANGI.
E kii ana te Kawanatanga a Te Kuini o Ingarangi,
e kore nia e whakaae kia whakaotia noatia nga tikanga
o te korero rongo-mau a Ruhia raua ko Take, kia
rongo ra ano, a, kia whakaae ano hoki te Kawanatanga
o Ingarangi ki aua tikanga rongo-mau, katahi ra ano
a Ingarangi ka mea, kua oti tika taua rongo-mau.

    TE KAWANATANGA A TE KUINI.
E kiia ana, kua hokona e te Kawanatanga o Te

        SIR G. GREY AT PAPAWAI.
On Friday evening Sir George Grey, accompanied.
by the Hon. Mr. Sheehan and the Hon. Hoani Nahe,
arrived at Featherston, where every room and every
bed were more than, fully occupied on account of the
races. A more inconvenient week, and as it happened,
a less convenient day than Friday, could not have
been chosen. But when. Sir George Grey telegraphed
from New Plymouth his intentions, he was not aware
that the annual race meeting of the Wairarapa Jockey
Club would come off at the very time his meeting
with the Wairarapa Natives was appointed to be held.
Owing to the non-arrival of Mr. Sheehan, Sir George
Grey was detained in Wellington until Friday, though.
he had been expected by the Natives on Tuesday,
who persisted in expecting his arrival until convinced
by the logic of facts of their error. There being no
suitable accommodation for Sir George Grey at
Featherston, he was kindly driven to the seat of Mr.
 C. Pharazyn at Longwood, where he was hospitably
 received, and found excellent accommodation.
Early on Saturday morning a coach, with six greys
bearing flags, and conveying several Maori chiefs,
proceeded, under the skilful guidance of Mr. James
Macara, to Featherston, and returned to Greytown
with the distinguished visitors about 10 o'clock, from
whence they at once went on to Papawai, a Native
village about two miles distant, accompanied by a
number of settlers in carriages or on horseback A
triumphal arch, had been erected at the gateway lead-
ing to the residence of the principal Native chief
Manihera ; and flags, banners, and streamers decorated.
the house and the other buildings in its vicinity. On
arriving at their destination several hundred Natives,
consisting of men, women, and children, raised three
hearty cheers for Sir George Grey, who was evidently
much moved by the cordiality of his reception.
Breakfast was provided in a large room, which had
been handsomely papered, furnished, and decorated
expressly for the occasion, the whole arrangements re-
flecting credit oh Mrs. Burch, who did the honors of
hostess for the day, and to whom they had been
 specially confided.
Among the chiefs present, besides Manihera, we
noticed Henare Tomoana, Te Retimana Te Koru
Tikawenga, Hikawera, Wi Waka (the Hauhau)
Karauria, Raniera, and Ngauere, the latter of whom
was the only one dressed in Native costume, and ever
he wore a black Parisian hat adorned with white
feathers. Chairs were provided for Sir G. Grey am
suite on the verandah, while the Natives, men am
women, some squatting on the ground and other
standing, formed a crescent in front. The speeches
made were chiefly of a congratulatory nature; they
all expressed satisfaction at the Premier's presence

                                TE WANANGA.
and their gratification in being afforded the oppor-
tunity of once more seeing him in their midst. The
only favor they asked was that H school should be
established for their children.
Sir George made, in Maori, an appropriate reply,
and after thanking them for the cordiality of their
welcome, and referring to his former visit, now many
years ago, he expressed "his gratification on hearing
that they desired to have their children educated after
the manner of Europeans, and promised that a school
should be at once provided.
Manihera then stood up, and expressed his confi-
dence in Sir George Grey, and his pleasure iu seeing
him at his house. Walking backwards and forwards
in the Maori manner, he sung a song of welcome,
most of the Natives joining in chorus, and again
stamping his foot on the ground he said, " I will not
forget the old times, I will welcome Kawana Grey."
Three cheers followed this sentiment from most of
the Natives present. Manihera concluded his speech
by the gratifying assurance that the Wairarapa
Natives would give up the Lake to Sir George Grey
to arrange for the good of both races and of all parties
interested.
The Hon. Mr. Sheehan then addressed the meeting
in Maori. He explained to them that Sir George
Grey would have to leave Wellington on Monday for
the South Island, but that he himself would return to
them, and endeavor to arrange any little matters of
dispute between them and the Government or the
Europeans, more especially with regard to a right of
road at Te Ore Ore, and the site of the bridge near
Tupurupuru. He considered the offer they hud made
to leave the Wairarapa Lake question in the hands of
the Premier the best course they could take under
 the circumstances.
Ngatuere, who remained, at the commencement of
his address, seated, spoke strongly against. Sir George
Grey leaving them so soon. They had come long
distances in order to see him, and if he went away
now the Natives would go away too, and it would be
 difficult to get another meeting.
Sir George Grey expressed his regret ut having to
leave them so soon. He did not know anything about
the races when he consented to pay them a visit, or
be would have chosen a more favorable time. It had
been long in his mind to pay them a visit, but owing
io the absence, at the beginning of the week, of Mr.
Sheehan up the West Coast, and to his arrangements
to visit the Middle Island, he could not possibly pro-
long his stay now, but might do so by-and-bye. He
reminded them, that in the days of their fathers, the
daughter of a great chief was in danger of being torn
to pieces in consequence of the number and ardour of
her admirers, who came from great distances in order
to capture their prize ; and that he found himself in
the position of the Maori maiden, being wanted in so
many places at the same time.
Loud laughter followed this allusion, and after
shaking hands with all the chiefs, their wives, and
 well-dressed and exceedingly well-conducted daughters,
Sir George Grey hurried to the coach which had been ]
some time waiting for him, Mr. Sheehan promising
 to return on Monday.—Wairarapa Standard.

      CORRESPONDENCE.
To THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA,
Salutations to you, my friend ; I greet you from a distance.
Friend, salutations to you, the person who issues TE
WANANGA, which is sent over all the many rivers. I wish.
you to answer the following questions :—
   1. 1s it right that each of 10 whose names are in one
Crown Grant to register, that each shall have a vote for a
 member of Parliament ?
   2. Certain land has been passed through the Native Lands
Court, and it has been made inalienable. We wish to leave
this land for seven, or more years.
If yon like, publish your answer in TE WANANGA.
   Maruata, Whangarei, 13th. February, 1878.

                    Answers to Questions.
   1. It has been held that if each of the ten grantees has an
interest of more value than £50, or if the whole block of land
in the Crown Grant is worth more than £500, each is entitled.
to a vote : but he mast first cause his name to be registered.
according to law. If there are eight grantees, the block of
land must be worth over £400 ; if six, it must be worth ever
£300 : so that in all cases each man's share must be at least
 £50.
