I pai ki nga tikanga a Kawana Kerei ma. He mea

Ka ki a Ihakara Kuao, raua ko Te Rahu, kia mania nga

Ka tu, a Te Mitara, mo te taha Kawanatanga. Ka mea e
ta iwi, e nga Rangatira kanui te pai o a koutou korero, me te
ata noho a te iwi i te ra nei. Kahore he tutu, kahore he
kino. Kanui, te pai o ta koutou whakahaere i a koutou kupu
mo nga upoko korero i kiia nei e Aperahama te Kuru hei take
korero ma te Hui nei. A ko te tino mahi tika e mahi ai nga
iwi Maori o Taupo koia kei nga korero upoko o nga korero
hei take korero me taua hui. A ko nga kupu 1, me te 2, me
te o 3 aua take tika e mahi ai nga iwi o Taupo e tupa ora ai
ana iwi. A he tino mea nui te ako a nga mahi i mahia i
mua, i kitea hoki te he o era, na reira te iwi i mea ai. Kaati
me mutu te mahi i nga mahi karakia horihori, me whai i nga
mea pono. A e he ana nga mahi kino o nga ra o te whawhia

paingia ana e te iwi kia mahia e Te Paremata, a ma te Pare
mata e ata titiro nea mahi he, a ma Te Paremata aua mahi he
e mahi kia mutu ai te he. Kaua e kii te tangata mana ma te
tangata kotahi e mahi he mahi mana ake, e ngari ma te iwi
katoa te whakaaro e tuku ki Te Paremata, a ma ratou ko Te
Paremata e ata mahi he pai mo te iwi katoa. A ki te mea e
pai ana nga Rangatira Maori, ma ratoa e ata mahi nga he o
nga whenua Maori e tika ai te whenua ki te tangata nona pu
ake te whenua, i te mea hoki, na nga whakatete whenua i
whakaohe to noho pai o nga iwi o Taupo. E pai ana mana
ma Te Mitara e ako ako nga Maori. Kia mohio ai ratou M
aua mea. E ki ana aia a Te Mitara, ko te mahi a nga Maori i
i whakahe nei ratou ki nga whenua kia Kana e ruuritia
Taupo. He kore kihai i tino marama te whakaaro a ana kai
whakahe, a he kupu kupu pea na etahi tangata mohio he, i
whakahe ai nga Maori ki aua ruuri mo aua whenua. A e he
ana te whakaaro a nga Maori e ki nei, ma nga teihana i
mahia nei e nga kai ruuri ki nga toitoi o nga maunga i
Taupo, e riro ai ana whenua i te Pakeha. E kore ana whenua
e riro i ana mea, he take ana mea kia tino tika ai te mahi
ruuri a te Pakeha e mohiotia ai nga eka whenua a te
 Maori mo te Maori ano.
I kii a Aperahama te Whatu, hei tona kainga te Kirihimete
m te tan e haere ake nei. A i mea tetahi Rangatira Tohunga,

Tauhara kia mahia, a me Oruanui ano hoki, a i oti katoa nga

THE following is the continuation of the report of, and
evidence taken by the Public Petitions Committee of the
Legislative Council on the petition of Te Hapuku and 203
other aboriginal Natives, published by us on the 8th
December, and in previous and subsequent issues.

            FRIDAY, 5TH OCTOBER, 1877.
        NEREHANA in attendance and examined.

294 The Chairman.'] What is your name ?—Nerehana
   295. Where do yon live?—I live at Moutoa, Manawatu
   296. Wero you at the meeting at Hawke's Bay ?—Yes.
   297. State to us what took place there.—I was the one
who erected this large meetinghouse, and, on its comple-
tion, this meeting took place. The meeting was opened
by reading the different subjects for discussion. There
were twenty-nine of them altogether. Ten of the subjects
were abandoned, leaving nineteen. There were only nine-
 teen subjects really carried.
   298. Was Te Aute among those subjects ?—I did not
hear the Te Aute subject read out. Te Auto was brought
in without notice afterwards. I remember them introduc-
ing this subject into the meeting afterwards.
   299. Did Renata speak on that subject?—I did not
hear Renata speak on the subject the first day.
   300. When did the meeting commence ?—It com-
menced on the 8th, but there was nothing done on the
first day. Mr. Williams and others arrived on the follow-

Ante was brought up and discussed.
    301. Rev. Mr. Williams.'] What was said by Renata ?
Renata introduced it when speaking on the subject of
Land Courts. He said, " Let. us have nothing to do with
Land Courts or Government Courts of any kind. Let us
have Courts of our own. Here is a Government man, Mr.
Williams ; let us turn him out and take the land back into
 our own hands."
    302. What did Mr Williams say in reply to Renata?—
His answer was very good in reply to Renata.

  329. Where do you live ?—I live at Moutoa, Manawatu,
  330. Did you sign your name to the petition?—I signed
my name near the foot of the sheets of lists of
names, objecting to the Land Court at Taupo. If my
name appears on this petition, the list of names have been
transferred from the petition I was supposed to be signing.
  331. Have you read the petition ?—There was no peti-
tion read, but papers were passed from one to another for
signature; there were two papers with lists of names, but I
only signed one, protesting against the sitting of the
Native Land Court at Taupo.
  332. How many days was this after the meeting ?—One
or two days.
  333. What Pakehas were there when the names were
signed ?— I was told that Mr Grace was the European
 present at the meeting.
   334. Did he bring the petition ?— I don't know.
   335. Who read the letter attached to the petition ?—
 There was no document read.
  336. Do you know the subject of the petition ?—I knew
the subject of the petition, I was supposed to be signing
then.
   237. That was the Taupo one?—Yes. As to the present
one I know nothing at all about it.
   238. Do you now know what this one refers to ? —Yes.
   239. Had you known what it was before, would you
have signed it ?— I would not have signed it.
   340. Then you do not endorse the prayer of the petition ?
 — I do not agree with that petition. I had nothing to do
with it at the time ; what I was concerned in was the
 land at Taupo.
341 Have you any complaint to make about Te Aute ?
 — I have nothing whatever to say about that grievance.
   342. Then you do not live in the district ? — I was there
 for six months only.
   343. Then you have no interest in the prayer of this
 petition?— No.
   344. Have you got any land in Hawke's Bay ?—I have
 no land there.
   345. Did Renata complain that the Ngaitewhatuiapiti,
the owners of the land, did not support him in what he
said about Te Aute ?—He did complain that they would
 not support him.
   346. When you stayed at Hawke's Bay, did you hear
any complaints made about the Te Aute School ?—I did
  not hear any complaints made.
    347. Did Renata Kawepo say that the Natives would
take the land back again ?—I heard Renata say that he
would turn me out because I was a Government pakeha.

To THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA
Salutations to you. Friend, put this notice into your news
paper, so that our thoughts may be known. These are our
thoughts. We honor the Queen (or express our loyalty to our
sovereign), and express our approbation of Sir George Grey,
and to his Government, and to his colleagues in the Parlia-
ment. And we know that his Government will give their
utmost consideration to those matters by which (to lighten)
the yoke which has been laid on the Maori people, and (hia
Government) will also use their best endeavors to lay down
some line of policy by which quiet peace and plenty may be
conveyed to both races who inhabit New Zealand. Hence,
we wish to inform all the world, that we (the tribes of Ngati-
kahungunu) will support and uphold the Government of Sir
George Grey.
We also wish to give utterance to the following words,
which is to remind all the officers of the late Government,
including also any who may be officers of the present Go-
vernment, that all said officers refrain from coming to our
settlements, or district, to speak to us on any matter, whether
of great or little importance, because we have been ruined by
the work of those men. If such officers do persist in coming
into our districts, we will cause them to depart in a manner
disagreeable to themselves. Now (let such officers) take notice
that we have spoken our words, and we will not act in any-
other way than we have (herein) stated. We have fully con-
sidered, and carefully pondered over all these matters. All
the people who may come to us in accordance with our
approval, will be the men of this Government and their new
officers, who may not have been in the employ of the late
 Government.
All the above was agreed to by us at a meeting at the
Waiohiki on the night of the 15th of this month (December),
 1877.
This, therefore, is from us from all the tribes of Ngati-
kahungunu, whose names are signed hereunder. But there is
one word more, (we wish to give expression to). Let the
 - tribes of these islands approve the following or not. Let your

tribes of these islands approve the following or not. Let your
work be in accordance with ours, so that we may act as one
and have but one thought, so that we may escape from the
deceit and duplicity which now envelops us all.
