HATAREI, NOEMA 16, 1878.
E KATA ana matou ki te ahua oho o etahi o te iwi
Pakeha, no te mea kihai a Kawana Kerei ma i pai
kia mahia hetia te whakaaro a Ta Tanara Makarini,
a kia kahore he pooti ma te Maori i nga wa e pooti
ai, a kia nui ake hoki he mana pooti ma te iwi
Pakeha. A ko te Ture Pooti i kiia hei Ture mo
te Pakeha e noho ana i enei motu kia pooti ratou
ana tae o ratou ra ki nga tau e rua, a i whakahe
Pooti i kiia hei tino Ture. Koia matou i mea ai,
kua kore nei hoki taua Ture, heoi, e mutu pea te
oho mauri a aua Pakeha.
E kiia ana ko nga mema o te Paremata Ariki, he
tangata ratou i tu ai he mohio, he, he iwi rangatira,
a he iwi e kore e tino riro rawa a ratou whakaaro ki
te ahua pohehe, koia ratou i tu ai hei mema mo te
Paremata Ariki. A ma taua Runanga hoki e ata
titiro nga mea tika e mahia ana e te Paremata e
kore ai e mahia kaikatia te mahi, a e kore ai hoki
e mahia hetia nga tikanga mo nga take e mahi ai te
Maori i nga mea i kiia hei mahi ma te iwi
Maori, a e he ana ia nei, kia kiia te he i he
E ki ana matou he nui
nga Pakeha he e noho nei i nga whare herehere,
a he nui hoki te mahi he a etahi o te Pakeha, heoi
ra e kore e tika ma te he o etahi o te Pakeha e he
katoa ai to iwi.
A ahakoa tohe
etahi o te Paremata kia iti iho he tikanga ma te
Maori e mahi ai i nga "mahi ma te iwi, kihai i tika
taua whakaaro i etahi o te Paremata. E mea ana
matou te take i kiia ai te Runanga Ariki o te Pare-
mata, he mea kia ata rapurapu uma Runanga i nga
mea hei pai ma te iwi Maori, a hei tiaki i nga tika-
nga i whakaaetia e Te Kuini i te Tiriti o Waitangi,
a i whakaaetia ano hoki e te pukapuka nana i tu ai
te Paremata i Nui Tireni. He mea pea i penei ai
te mahi a etahi o nga mema o te Paremata, he mea
rawa a Kawana Kerei e pai kia mahia te he mo te
iwi. a e kore aia e noho haangu i te wa o te he e
whakahengia ana, e tino kiia nuitia ana aua kupu
whakahe i nga mahi he a nga Kawanatanga tawhito.
I kii pea taua hunga, me whakaae nga mea hei nui
ma te Pakeha, a ko te Maori me kore he pooti mana
tohe noa taua hunga e whakaae a Kawana Kerei raua
ko Te Hiana ki taua tikanga, he mea hoki i peneitia
ai, hei rore ia raua, kia kino mai ai nga iwi Maori
kia raua. E kore a Kawana Kerei e raru noa, he
nui tana pai kia tika he Ture ma te Pakeha, otira e
tino aro katoa ana aana whakaaro kia tino tika kia
tino pai he Ture ma nga iwi Maori, kia tupu ora ai
te iwi, ahakoa nui noa te hiahia a Kawana Kerei kia
pooti katoa te iwi Pakeha, heoi ra e kore aia e pai
ko taua iwi e pooti, a ko te Maori kia kaua e pooti,
| a kihai te Pira pooti hou i mahia, he ana taua Pira

A i enei ra
e kore etahi o te tini katoa 6 te iwi Pakeha e pooti.
E ki ana matou, kua kitea ano to tino hiahia a
Kawana Kerei, kia mahi tino tika aia ki nga iwi
Maori, a i aia e Kawana ana, he mana nui tana
mana i aua ra e ora ai te Maori i aia, ko tenei, he
nui rawa tana mana i enei ra, i te mea kua nui rawa
ake he kaha ona i aia e tu nei hei Pirimia, e ora
enei ra e kohuru i ana iwi, engari ka tautoko tonu
Heoi
ano te hunga e wehi ki te pooti a te Maori ko te
hunga Pakeha, kua mahi he, kua mahi hoko nuka-
rau i te whenua a te Maori. Na aua mahi he aia
i wehi ai, kei nui te Maori, ka he ana mahi he i
mahi ai.

           SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1878.

WE do not know how sufficiently to admire the
scare effected by a section of the Europeans because
the Government did not propose to reverse Sir
Donald McLean's policy, and to take away the
right of the Maoris to vote at elections in the
districts in which their property is situate
while increasing the existing right of the Euro-
peans. The Electoral Bill carried through the
House of Representatives, which conferred for the
first time the right to vote upon every European
born in the colony or resident therein for two years,
and which also, in spite of the determined opposi-
tion of Mr. Ormond, Mr. Sutton, Captain Russell,
Captain Morris, and a few others, protected and
made clearer the existing rights of the Maoris, is
not to become law because of the action of the
Legislative Council. We hope, therefore, the scare
we so sincerely admire will now cease, fur such
sights pall a little with undue continuance.
The Legislative Council is composed of men
nominated by the Government of the day for their
wisdom, freedom from party strife, or amount of
property; sometimes, indeed, nominated for still
less worthy motives. The first duty of such a
body is to control legislation hastily entered into by
the House of Representatives by reason of the tem-
porarily inflamed passion of the people. In New
Zealand such hasty action was expected often to
take the form of restriction of Native rights. Such
a quarrel as that between Hiroki and the European
cook at Waimate might be used, as it was lately

                    MORE ABOUT THE MOA.
A correspondent of the name of Alfred Berry, of
Matakitaki, writing to the New Zealand Times, says :
—" Would you kindly insert this in your newspaper—
Last autumn I and my mate were out, prospecting for
gold betwixt Lake Rotorua and Cannibal Gorge, in
the Province of Nelson. We heard a strange screech-
ing noise in a gully about a hundred yards from where
we were camped, and we went to where the noise
proceeded from, and to our surprise we saw two
gigantic birds coming towards us. They did not show
the least alarm at seeing us, but continued coming to
where we were, so we took to our-heels. We heard
them two or three times that night again. Having
no gun with us, we thought it advisable to start the
next morning for fear they would tackle us. One of
I them was apparently about twelve feet high, and the
other somewhat smaller, with feathers resembling the
I have no doubt but-they were moas. I have
mentioned it to several persons, and did intend going
out in search of them this summer, but hearing that
a party was forming in Wellington to go in search of
moas, I thought I would acquaint you • with these
facts, and if they should start out I would advise
them to come here in search of them, and we would
be most happy to direct them or to conduct them to
the spot where we saw them."

E kiia ana he tini nga kohatu Raimana kua kitea i

Several diamonds have been found in Tasmania. A

them as large as beans, have, says ihe Cornwall
Chronicle, been artistically cut in London, and for-
warded to Launceston. Four- of these gems were
found at tin drives in the Ringarooma District.
and the other three in the Straits Islands.

The adjourned debate was resumed on the question,
"That, on Wednesday next, this House will resolve itself

ful address to be presented to His Excellency the Go-
vernor, requesting him to cause the sum of £500 to be
placed upon the supplementary estimates for the purpose
of translating into the Maori language Mr. A. Mackay's
work on Middle Island Native affairs."
Mr. Whitaker said he had moved the adjournment of
the debate solely for the purpose of giving the Native

necessary to make provision for the purpose stated by
