SATURDAY, AUGUST 31, 1878. WE acknowledge the receipt of a pamphlet entitled Ryotwarry, a Solution of the Maori Laud Question,'' * which we have been requested to translate and insert in TE WANANGA. We have read the pamphlet, but we do not in the least agree with the writer, nor can we publish any part of it. We are inclined to condemn any interference of a stranger in a matter about which he shows him- self so utterly ignorant, and we wonder at his assumption in giving advice in matters which relate to the Native race of New Zealand. If our colony has been spoken of as the most suitable residence in which invalids may recruit their health, it does not follow that we are to be annoyed by the insane meddling of such invalids, whose unstrung intellects prompt them to assume the position of law givers. New Zealand is not wanting in able men, yet our oldest and best educated politicians in Maori matters feel a doubt when they attempt to solve the Maori land question. From observation we are inclined to assert that residents of one year in New Zealand assume to I know more about the Maori people than residents of twenty years. So soon as these would-be wise have learnt to speak a little of the Maori language the light of facts creates a certain amount of know- ledge which leads in some instances to dispel the myth that formerly occupied the mind of its pos- sessor, and when the residence has extended over a few years, the Native question, which before was taken as an easy matter to solve, looks like a tangled web that more and more becomes unreadable to the European mind. There is not any question less understood by the European than the Maori right to deal with land and there is not any right to property which a Maori holds with more sacred jealousy than his own personal right to deal with his land. We have heard of many suggestions offered by Europeans to deal with the Maori lands, but of all the pro- posals the wildest and the most impracticable is that which is proposed in the pamphlet in question. If the writer of the pamphlet will remain silent and make use of ordinary observation, and pass, say, ten years in New Zealand, we promise him at the end of that time a complete reversion of his present aspirations, and a full and entire correc- tion of his present ignorance. If, as we suppose, the pamphlet has been trans- lated into the Maori language, we would call the attention of those of our Maori readers who have read it to the proposal made therein, to take all the right from the Maori to deal with his land and to give it to commissioners—a scheme so revolting to the Maori mind that we have no hesitation in saying that " Ryotwarry" will not for one instant be listened to by the tribes. NGA RONGO KORERO; TE KARA A MA HAMITI. I kiia i te takiwa o Ruhia raua ko Take e whawhai ana, kia maua te kara a te Take, a to ratou Ariki o mua, hei kara arahi i te ope taua a Take ki te wha- whai. He mea hoki na taua iwi Take, he kara mana: taua kara ana kawea ki te riri. A te take i kore ai e kawea taua kara e te Take i to raua he ko Ruhia, he mea kua tahaetia taua kara e te tangata, a hoake rawa te mahara a te Take ki ta ratou oha kua riro i te iwi ke, a na te kore o taua kara i kawea ki te riri a Take raua ko te Ruhia, i mea ai te iwi Take, na reira aia a Take, i mate ai ia Ruhia. THE STANDARD OF THE PROPHET MAHOMET. It is said that the real reason why the Porte aban- doned the idea of unfolding the '"Standard of the Prophet." with which Europe has been so often threat- ened, was the very simple one that the sacred emblem is no longer in its possession. According- to a Ger- man contemporary, an Italian traveller succeeded some years ngo in bribing the guardians of the mosque where the Standard was kept. and succeeded in getting possession of the relie, which at the present moment is iu the Museum of Tarin. The ulemas and dervishes attribute to the loss of the standard all the misfortunes which have attended the arms of Islam. Coming Events.

He aha ra te take i iti ai. He haere ke atu pea na etahi ki etahi iwi ke atu noho ai. NATIVE CENSUS OF TAURANGA. The Bay of Plenty Times published the census re- turns of the Native population of that district, which are as follows:—Tauranga District Males, 573, females, 513 ; total, 1,086. Maketu District: Males, 1,300; females, 1,019 ; total, 2,319. Opotiki District: Males, 1,512; females, 1,263 : total, 2,775. Totals : Tauranga district, 1,086; Maketu, 2,319 ; Opotiki, 2,775. Grand total, 6,180. This includes the Ure- wera tribe, with the exception of those members of that tribe residing at Waikaremoana. On comparing this year's census returns with the last, taken in 1874, a very marked decrease in the Native population is manifest. The census returns of 1874 showed a Native popula- tion in the Bay of Plenty numbering 6,648; the decrease has thus been at the rate of 15 per cent, during the last four years. It may be excepted as a general fact that the Maori race is declining rapidly in many Native districts throughout New Zealand ; gradually, but no less more assuredly, in others. HE KEKENO I HOPUKIA E TETAHI TAMAITI. E ki ana te Nupepa o Katapere. He haerenga no tetahi tamaiti ki te akau i Wuruera, a ka kite aia i te kekeno e noho a i te akau, a ko te mea i te ringa o taua tamaiti he tarapu tera hoiho, a na taua tamaiti i patu tana ika ki taua tarapu tera. E waru puutu te roa o taua kekeno. CAPTURE OF A SEAL AT CANTERBURY. On Friday morning a lad named Rambey, while searching for frost fish on the beach at Woodend in the Canterbury district came across a large seal. With no other weapon than a stirrup iron the boy pluckily tackled it, and with some trouble succeeded in killing the creature. The carcase was conveyed to Woodend, where it is now being exhibited. It is over 8 feet long, and fought for nearly an hour with its small antagonist. TE HUKARERE 1 TAKAPAU. No tera marama i tino nui ai te hukarere i te Taka- pau, i Nepia, a e ono inihi te hohonu o taua hukarere i te whenua e takoto ana. SNOWFALL AT TAKAPAU. A heavy fall of snow occurred in the Forty-Mile Bush last month. At 7 a.m. there were six inches of snow all over the ground, and it has not yet cleared away. HE WHEUA MOA. No tera wiki i kitea ai nga whena moa e te Pa- keha, i ko mai o Taratera i Nepia. He repo te wahi i keria e te Pakeha ka kitea aua wheua, kahore he wheua moa kia pera te nui me aua wheua i kitea nei. MOA BONES DISCOVERED AT NAPIER. A man named Harpham, who has been engaged by Mr. H. S. Tiffen to drain the swamp at the foot of the Puketapu Hills, has come across some moa bones, which, for size are unequalled to any yet found in the colony. The swamp, we learn, is teaming with the bones of the moa. Those interested in scientific pursuits should pay the swamp a visit.

The cause of the apparent increase is attributed to the census being more perfect than in previous years, owing to the present peaceful state of the Natives, and the number therefore being more easily ascer- tained correctly. The Whatawhata correspondent of New Zealand Herald writes :—" Andrew Barton, of Karakariki, has died suddenly. It appears from the report that he had been stung, during sleep, by some poisonous insect, for in the morning a small mark was observable upon his lip. This gradually swelled until the whole head was swollen terribly. Oa Saturday last he died, after having been three days ill. The Natives attri- bute his death to witchcraft. Andrew Barton will be generally regretted. He was indeed a Native gentleman. For many years" he had occupied a responsible position as Government assessor and mail contractor, and has always been held in great respect. The Europeans have lost a staunch ally, for Andrew Barton's loyalty was undoubted." Notice by me, by Te Hapuku, respecting the Lake Poukawa, that it shall not be Drained after my Death. The following is a law made by me, by Te Hapuku, which shall be an unalterable law for my lands at Te Hauke which have not passed through the Native Lands Court, and this law shall be a law to all future generations. Friend, the Editor of TE WAHANGA, publish this, my notice, to all the world, and let it go over all the world, so that all the tribes who live on these islands may see. it, that is, all the Maori and European people. Let it appear in the Maori and English languages. Now, this is my word : That the Poukawa Lake shall not be touched or meddled with by European or Maori, nor shall anyone dig or make a drain by which the water shall escape (from the lake), and thereby cause the lake to dry up. I will not be right or just if any person whatever assume any right or authority over my lands. I have a name ; I have authority over all the lands which I own, and this portion I now hold is very small—it is Te Hauke only—so that this portion shall be left as it was in days gone by, according to Maori customs and rights. And let no Crown grant, no inves- tigation by the Native Lands Court be made or held for this land, Te Hauke, and on to Poukawa Lake, which is now held according to Maori right, so that this, my Maori Law, shall take effect on it, as such law was the law of my ancestors for ages past and even down to the days in which I, Te Hapuku, bare lived. Friend, the Editor of TE WANANGA, send my law to Sir G. Grey, that he may approve of this, my Maori law. But I have power over my own lands. Let this notice be published each Saturday of the months of all the year 1878. This is the word of the meeting of old chiefs in support of the words of Te Hapuku, and it is true that we heard his words that not any European should meddle with or cut drains, so that the water of the Lake Poukawa could escape, and thereby drain that lake. And the reasons for his words are these : This land has not been passed through the Native Lands Court, there has not been a Crown grant issued for it, and it is held by Native title, as he, Te Hapuku, is the sole holder (Crown grant) of this land, and Te Hapuku is the Native Mana of this land, and such right to this land has been that by which this land has been held from the grand- fathers who held it in ages past, and even down to us the off- spring of those ancient owners. Let not any person assume any right to ignore this Maori law, as Renata Tamakihi- kurangi has made this law steadfast on Te Hauke, as it is land at Te Hauke, which is held by Maori custom, and it includes all the land all around the margin of the Lake Poukawa. In some future time the boundaries of the land held under Maori right will be given, that is, all the Hauke lands and all around the lake, over which this Maori law shall have effect. Now, O Editor of TE WANANGA, be quick and put this notice into TE WANANGA, so that it may be seen by the Maori and European public. Let this notice be published ou each Saturday of the months in the year 1878. Enough, from all the committee which is now being held at Te Hauke. Na Te Harawira te Tatere. Na Renata Tamakihikurangi, Na Te Ropiha te Takou, Na Raniera te Iho, Na Hemi te Hukui, "Ka Ropata te Hoa, Na Te Waaka Rewharewha, Na Kiingi Tohunga, Na Matene Waewae, Ko Maika te kai tahi, 88 PANUITANGA.
