  Published every Saturday.

  WE  deem  it our duty to inake an apology to the
 Maori  tribes on account of our not being able to meet
  them at their various places of abode, to speak on the
  subject of which TE  WANANGA,  and its subscribers,
  would be the matters to be discussed. In consequence
  of many  changes  which  have been  transpiring in
  the political world we have been detained at Napier,
  but  so soon  as  we  can  settle many  little details
  relative to enlarging the WANANGA, we fully intend to
  meet  the tribes, according to our former intimated
  intention, when  we will lay before the Maori people
  all that pertains to the object, support, and conduct-
  ing of a newspaper, intended to give information and
  instruction to the New Zealander.
    In a future issue we  will be able to state the time
  when the tribes may expect us to meet them.

         THE  NATIVE  MINISTER.
  The  N.Z. Herald, in commenting  on the reception
of Sir George Grey and Mr. Sheehan at the Thames,
says :—" The speech of Mr. Sheehan  was an emi-
nently practical one, and, being delivered in a racy
and attractive manner, it took exceedingly well with
the audience.  He  has  indeed every  reason to be
proud of his welcome at the Thames.  It was to be
expected that in any town within the provincial dis-
trict of Auckland  he should meet  with  a cordial re-
ception.  Born  in the  colony, educated in this city,
never out of the Province of Auckland until some five
years ago, when  he  went hence  to Wellington  to
take his seat in the Parliament of the colony, he has
achieved  within a  short period of time  one of the
most prominent positions in the Government  of the
colony.    Naturally, people  in Auckland   who  re-
member    the  Native   Minister in  his  boyhood
 as  a   clever,  studious,   and   versatile  youth,
feel  gratified at  the   spectacle  of  a  native  of
this  city reaching  such  a  post.   Mr.   Sheehan
 was the  first New  Zealander born of European
parents, who entered the Parliament of the colony ;
he is the first who has entered the ranks of the colo-
 nial Ministry ; and if a wise judgment and prudent
circumspection mark his endeavors as a Minister, we
 do not doubt that still higher honors are yet ia store
for him.   He is steadily securing a popularity on both,
 sides of the House of  Representatives, the retention,
 and increase of which rests largely with himself.

   REMARKABLE    SUICIDE  OF A MAORI
                 WOMAN.
   Information was received in town yesterday of the
 death of a Maori woman,  living at the Big  River,
 named  Meri Hoturangi, tinder the most extraordinary
 and painful circumstances. Meri is a married woman
 and has always been considered by  her tribe as of
 irreproachable character, although of somewhat  ir-
 ritable temper. Two or three days back she had some
 angry words with her husband ; when under strong
 excitement he accused her of being unfaithful to him.
 She denied the imputation, exclaiming  bitterly that
 such a charge should have been made  against her.
 When  the intensity of her grief had  subsided Meri
 retired to a corner of her whare where she remained
 several hours without uttering a word or returning
 answers to questions which, were  put to her.  The
 next day Meri was found dead. After a short search
 the cause was discovered. The woman  had  deter"

mined  to commit suicide as, according to the custom
of her people, it would establish her innocence. She
procured a box of wax matches and having cut off the
heads containing phospherous and other deadly che-
micals, in combination, she swallowed the whole. Her
agonies must from the nature of the poison, have been
intense.  But that no one should be a witness to her
sufferings she had gone beyond the sounds of ear and
there  writhing in terrible torment she died.  The
countenance of the deceased woman when  discovered
was most horrible to look upon. The body was taken
by her friends, and notice forwarded to Mr. H. Ken-

  SIR GEORGE   GREY  AS PREMIER.
                          (London " Times.")
 IT  is a somewhat  peculiar position which  Sir  George
 Grey has now  assumed.  That an ex-Governor should
 descend contentedly to the rank of a private citizen, and
 should rise on his merits to the Premiership, is an incident
 of politics not likely to recur very frequently.  It is al-
 most as if the Commander-in-chief of  an army were to
 quit his post and to enlist as a private soldier, and were to
 be promoted subsequently to a leading staff appointment.
 He  would be  well qualified, no doubt, for such a place,
 and his holding it might be a source oi some embarrass-
 ment both to those under whom  he was to act and to
 himself.  We  hopo this analogy will not hold good in the
 present case.  Sir George  Grey's  career as a  Colonial
 Governor  has been a very remarkable one. In Western
 Australia, at the Cape, and iu New Zealand, he has had to
 deal with " the Native question" in many forms, and he
 has always showed  himself equal to the difficult task.
 There has been no Governor more popular among  the
  Natives of the colonies he has ruled. On more than one
  occasion, when Native troubles have cropped up after his
  departure, he has been fixed upon almost as a matter of
  course, and sent back again to quiet them. His work on
  the Polynesian Mythology contains good proof, direct and

indirect, of the pains he took to fit himself for what he '
deemed the imperative duties of his Governorship. Not
lightest amongst these was a perfect acquaintance with
the language of his Native subjects. When he left New
Zealand and and settled down, finally, as it was supposed
in England, it was scarcely possible to help feeling how
great a pity it was that all his studies should have been
thrown away, or should have borne fruit only in the past.
What  mark, however, he is likely to make in his new post
as Premier is another question. He comes to it with high
 antecedents, but not, perhaps, with just the kind of ante-
 cedents which may now be thought most necessary for it.
 The administrative policy to which he stands committed
 is, to say the least, an exceedingly doubtful one, and one
 which the course  of last year's legislation has rendered
 more doubtful than  ever. But  Sir George  Grey may,
 perhaps, content himself with modifying  in detail what
  e will not attempt radically to alter. It is likely enough
 to be some temporary back current which has carried him
 into office ; and, as home experience shows us, those who
 take office in such circumstances must be satisfied not to
 govern, and must often keep in the  back ground their
 most  distinctive party principles.

MURDER    OF  A  COMMISSIONER    AT
      THE   CAPE   OF  GOOD    HOPE.

 THE following particulars of the murder of Mr. Bell in the
 Transvaal we take from an English paper :—" One of the
 most  distressing circumstances that has happened for
 years has just occurred in New Scotland, on the eastern
 border of the Transvaal, close to Swazieland. Mr. Robert
 Bell, J.P., of Cragie Lee, has been murdered by Mabekana,
 a Swazie refugee and head of a small kraal, living on Mr.
 Bell's farm. It appears the Commissioner went to investi-
 gate the circumstances of a complaint of theft preferred
 against this native. Knowing him to be a quarrelsome,
 dangerous man,  Mr. Bell unwisely proceeded unarmed,
 and accompanied by ten native police, also unarmed, pre-
 ferring to rely on his position and well-known influence
 for bis safety rather than weapons. The  native refused
 to give up the cattle or to proceed to the magistrate's re-
 sidence, whereupon  Mr. Bell ordered his men to take hira
 by  main force. Mabekana   sprang  to his feet instantly,
  calling to his few fellows to seize their assegais and mur-
  der every one, allowing none to escape alive. Mr. Bell's
 men  fled, pursued by the excited Swazies. First one and
  then another dropped, as he was overtaken by the deadly
  assegai. Two escaped badly wounded, and two unhurt.
  The last that was seen of Mr. Bell was on one knee calmly
  talking, as if reasoning with his assailant. Then be stood
  up defiantly, and in another moment  was  killed, being
  stabbed through the heart. He lay on the ground dead,
  and beside him six of his unarmed escort. A few hours
  later, when darkness had set in, his brother-in-law, who
  happened to be the first to receive the dreadful tidings,
  having collected as many Kaffirs as he could at a mo-
  ments notice, cautiously approached the kraal. All was
  still and quiet, saving the bleating of a few goats and the
  grazing of some cattle left behind in the hurried flight of
  the fugitives.  There lay poor Bell brutally murdered iu
  the discharge of what he considered his duty.
    One  most painful incident in this tragedy was that his
  young wife, who had accompanied him part of the way,
  was  awaiting her husband's return at a neighbouring
  farm.  Hour  after hour passed, and at length impatience
  gradually gave way to anxiety for his safety. Then came
  the breaking to her of the  terrible news; she was  a
  widow, and Cragie Lee was without  a master. Mr. Bell
  is well known in this and the neighbouring colonies. He
   arrived here about ten years ago with the Scottish emi-
   grants, holding a  responsible position under  the late
  Glasgow and South African Land Company.  Previous to
   this he had successfully worked in New  Zealand. He
   was respected and loved by all, as much for his hospi-
   tality and kindness as his love of justice and honesty of
   purpose. Mebekana  is a refugee from the Amaswazies.
   Being compelled about a year and a-half ago to fly, he
   was allowed to squat on Mr. Bell's farm. No one will for
   a moment look upon this in any other light than that of a
   cowardly murder, nor will it be doubted for an instant
   that our allies and the faithful allies of the late govern-
   ment—the   Swazies to which  this man  belongs—are so
  sorry for what has happened as we are. That the mur-
  derer will be readily given up  if caught by his  own
  people is certain ; but he is scarcely likely to fly to a
  country from which he is an outlaw.—Telegraph.

         TE AUTE COLLEGE TRUST.         

THE following is the continuation of the report of, and
evidence taken by, the Public Petitions Committee of the
Legislative Council on the petition of Te Hapuku and 203
other aboriginal Natives, published by  us on  the 8th
December, and in previous and subsequent issues.
  200. Rev. Mr. Williams.'] I would like to ask Mr. Grace
what were the subject of the speeches at the meetings he
attended ?—Te   Aute school was  one subject of those
speeches;  I took notes of all the proceedings.
  201. I would ask whether Renata's speech was not an
attack on the Government because it would not recognise
what they wanted ?—They  spoke on several subjects ; part
was with respect to the Native Lands Court. They said
that they would prefer that the present Judges and As-
sessors should be done away with, and that they should
manage  their own lands. They also spoke of Te Aute.
  202. Renata, rose and complained, that they did not
support him in anything he said ?—Renata did not say
 so.
   203. Did not  I call your  attention to the fact, that
 Renata had made that complaint publicly at the meeting ?
—You   did not say so. You drew my attention to the fact
 that not a Native who was formerly an owner of the land
 had spoken on the matter, but you did not draw my atten-
 tion to the fact that Renata had complained.
   204. I will simply call Mr. Grace's attention to this fact,
 that not one of the owners of the land supported Renata?
 —I  have notes of the whole of the speeches at Napier ;
 and, if required, can get them.
   205. How  soon can you get these notes?—I can tele-
 graph for them.
   206. The Chairman.'] You had better get them.
   207.  Rev. Mr.  Williams."]  Can  you  say  positively
 that this Te Aute affair was mentioned at the public
 meeting ?—Yes  ; I have been to three public meetings of
 Maoris, and at every meeting  this Te Aute  matter was
 brought up, and the same statement was made at every
 meeting by Renata and others, that this was handed over
 for school purposes and is badly managed.
   208. Renata told me that he and his father were the
 only person recognised ?—I don't know  whether he said
 that. I know  he said the land was  handed  over for
 school purposes.
   209. Do you remember telling me what was the cause
 of Renata's objection to the matter of Educational Trusts?
 —I  cannot remember telling you why he complained.
   210.  Are you  aware that money  Las been paid to
 Renata for  his and (Ohaoko block) ?—You told me
 Renata had received £300 odd for it.
   211. The first I heard of it was from Mr. Grace ?—Te
 Hapuku   said, and I think one or two others said, that
 they used to send their children to the Te Aute  school,
 and they were made to work and to gather dung.
   212. There was not a remark of that kind made at the
 public meeting ?—Perhaps not in your presence. I know
 it was said, and will swear to it. The Natives said their
 children who were  sent to school had a little teaching, but
 most  of their time was  taken up in learning farming,
 cutting down  trees, and clearing land.
   213. I would ask Mr. Grace whether he heard Mr. Rus-
 sell, on the  afternoon of the  8th, making  complaints
 before the Native chiefs as to my  conduct?—I  do  not
 know  whether it was on the 8th, but I was called into a
  whare, and a discussion cropped up with respect to Te
  Aute.  Henare  Matua asked Mr. Russell a question about
  the land, and Mr. Russell told them that the Europeans of
  Napier were discontented and disapproved of the way in
 which  the land was managed.
   214. I would ask Mr. Grace whether Henare Matua said
  one single word at that meeting at which I was present?
  —You  were not present during the whole of that meeting.
  I know that Henare Matua spoke on the matter.  The
Natives did not break up until two days after you wero
there.
  215. Was  there any resolution passed upon  this sub-
ject during any part of the meeting?—A    resolution of
what kind?
  216. Finding fault ?—I suppose it was tantamount to a
resolution.  Several chiefs got up and spoke, and said
they would  issue a petition. I consider a resolution was
carried, because the whole of the Natives present signed
the petition.
  217. The  chairman.]  When  the  Maoris  hold these
meetings  what  is  their usual  course of  procedure?
After several Maoris getting up and speaking to a sub-
ject, is there nothing put to the meeting?—Generally
speaking it is this way : Several chiefs get up and speak to
one point, and, if agreeing in whatever is said, and no one
 getting up afterwards to speak against it, it is considered
 as a resolution carried. It is only lately, since Europeans
have shown  them how to act, that they pass resolutions.
 At this hapu meeting it was not called to go into any
 questions of politics or otherwise.
   218. Were there any  resolutions passed at that meet?
 ing?—Henare  Matua  read  some resolutions, I think, of
 his own. Some of these resolutions were read out and
 talked over, but I do not think they were put to the vote,
   219. Were   the principal Natives who  attended  that
 meeting interested in the land?—Do you mean interested
 personally as owners of the land ?
   220. Yes ; as holders?—They were interested in the land
 in this way: It is supposed this land was set aside for
 school purposes for Maori  children, and therefore they
 were interested.
   221. With respect to tribe?—Without respect to any
 particular tribe.
   222. Where did the Natives belong to who  were pre-
 sent ?—There were a great number of Natives present, but
 I could not tell you whether they were all Hawke's Bay
 Natives who were  present, but they were Natives inter-
 ested in the Hawke's Bay district.
   223. Rev. Mr. Williams.] I would like to ask Mr. Grace
 whether, if any of those resolutions were read out after
 the Natives had spoken to the subject, they gave their
 voices for the " Ayes," or was any consent given ?—I be-
 lieve there was, but am not quite certain.
   224. Were you not acting as Secretary ?—Yes, and took
 notes of all that was done. My notes would tell me, but
 I could not well speak from memory whether such ques-
 tions were put to the vote.
   225. Did you not  hear of Renata having complained
 that he had let his land, and had only six months rent
 paid him?—You   told me something of the kind.
   226. Are you not aware that there are two schools in
 this district in which there are no scholars ?—I can say
 something on that point. The Natives say they got no-
 thing from  Government.   They  built two schools, and
 were told that for every pound they paid they would get
two from Government; but, they said, the money had
 never been paid to them by Government. That was the)
 principal reason why the school at Pakowhai broke up.
   227. Did not the Natives complain that they could not
 induce their children to attend these schools ?—I have not
 heard so. I believe they have spoken to two persons—
 one an inspector of schools, and somebody they said had
 been travelling round, who promised that they should get
 the money from Government  in addition to the money
 subscribed by themselves.
   228. The Chairman.] Just tell me, as near as you can
 what Renata did say at this meeting ?—Renata got up and
 spoke on several occasions ; and seeing the Rev. Mr. Wil-
 liams present, he  said he was  glad he was there and
  would speak faithfully. He  was not  afraid of any thirty
 he was going to say. He then said he was very much
  dissatisfied with the management of the Te Aute estate.
 The  management, he said, was so bad that they would

eventually take the land back and manage it themselves. I
I think he spoke about his own land, -which he had  I

going to hand over that land for generations to come,
and, if the Maoris became extinct, he would let it go for
the benefit of Europeans. He has made these speeches on
several occasions, and  repeated those words  which  are
published in the WANANGA newspaper. He  said the Te
Aute  estate was badly managed, and thought of getting it
back  again.
   229. Rev. Mr. Williams.'] Try and remember whether
 Renata made any allusion whatever to the management of
 tihe Te Aute estate ?—Yes, he alluded to its bad manage-
 ment.
   230. I am sorry to say that I am  in this position : I
 must put my  word against that of Mr. Grace. I have
 given my  evidence on the subject, and do not agree with
  him.—Mr. Grace."} I was present the whole time, and I
 recollect very well what was said. Renata seemed to feel

   231. Have you made any remarks to Renata bearing on
 my character, and drawing a comparison between me and
 your own father ?—No ; I have not. The Natives have
 said to me that they looked to you in times past, and
 especially at the time of their land transactions, to direct
 and  advise them ; but that your advice has been bad.
 They  also told me that the only minister who they could
 say had not done the Maoris any harm, but had been their
 true friend, was my father.
   232. Hon.  Colonel Brett.'} Who was that?—The  Rev.
 Mr. Grace, my father. I never drew any comparison with
 respect to Mr. Williams. Henare Matua had a conversation
 with me on the subject.
    233. Hon. Colonel Brett.'} I do not think this proceeding
  is in accordance with the rules, for Mr. Williams to im-
  proach the evidence of a witness in the way he has done.
    do not think it is fair to allow it, as Mr. Grace has been
  sent here, and it is our duty to protect him.

         To THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA
  Salutations to you. Friend, put this notice into your news
paper, so that our thoughts may be known. These are ou-
thoughts.  We honor the Queen (or express our loyalty to our
sovereign), and express our approbation of Sir George Grey,
and to his Government, and  to his colleagues in the Parlia-
ment.  And  we know  that his Government  will give their
utmost consideration to those matters by which  (to lighten)
the yoke which has been laid ou the Maori people, and (his
Government)  will also use their best endeavors to lay down
some line of policy by which quiet peace and plenty may be
conveyed to both races who inhabit New Zealand. Hence.
we wish  to inform all the world, that we (the tribes of Ngati-
kahungunu)  will support and uphold the Government of Sir
George Grey.
  We   also wish to give utterance to the following  words,
which is to remind all the officers of the late Government,
including also any who may be  officers of the present Go-
vernment,  that all said  officers refrain from coming to our
settlements, or district, to speak to us on any matter, whether
of great, or little importance, because we have been ruined by
the work of those men. If such officers do persist in coming
into our districts, we will cause them to depart in a manner
disagreeable to themselves. Now (let such officers) take notice
that we have spoken our words, and we will not act in any
other way than wo have (herein) stated. We have fully con-
sidered, and carefully pondered over all these matters.  All
the people who may  come  to us in accordance with  our
approval, will be the men of this Government and their new
officers, who may not  have been in the employ  of the late
Government.
  All the above was agreed to by us at a meeting at  the
Waiohiki on the night of the 15th of this month (December).
1877.
   This, therefore, is from us  from  all the  tribes of  Ngati-
kahungunu, whose names are signed hereunder. But there is
one word move  (we  wish to  give expression to). Let the
tribes of these islands approve the following or not. Let your
work be in accordance with ours, so that we may act as one
and have but one thought, so that we may escape from the
deceit and duplicity which now envelops us all.
