 OUR  subscribers have evidenced of late the intense
 interest enkindled in the Maori public  mind as to
 the ultimate results likely to accrue from  the Wai-
 tara  and  Waikato   meetings.  We   are  glad that
 TE  WANANGA   has been the cause of arousing such
 a genuine feeling of want in the Maori mind to be
 informed  of all that  is going  on in  the world.
 Since  the  treaty of Waitangi,   the Maoris  have
 had  the same incentive as their European  fellow
 colonists to take an interest in all that may foster a
 good feeling amongst all people; they have at the
 same  time learnt by a bitter experience that words are
  more powerful for good, and can  obtain for them
 as a people more benefits than any amount of obstruc-
  tion. We  are glad that such a feeling has become
 strong in  the minds  of ail the leading chiefs, and
  that they acknowledge the fact that all wrongs are
to be righted by law, and not by animal force that
all complaints are to be uttered in a respectful and
definite manner to the powers that be, partly created
by themselves; that when any  matter of public
interest is taken into consideration by the bulk of
the people, such  subject, if respectfully laid before
the country, must and will obtain a due and careful
consideration at the hands of the legislature which
its bearing on the public good demands.
   We are aware that till a few years past each hapu,
or generic tribe, or migration, were in the habit of
ignoring the authority of the chiefs of other tribes;
hence the  difficulty of enacting any general laws
that might be  acceptable to the Maori  tribes as a
whole, in fact there was not what the Europeans
might  term  any governing power, which  all the
tribes allowed to dictate to them  as  a combined
people, what was best for the common good of all
 The  various and difficult disputes which arose be-
 tween the tribes, and the suspicion manifested by
 the Maori people when  laws were enacted in past
 years by the Parliament of New Zealand have been
 serious impediments  to all good legislation. But
 now that the Maori has had some experience in the
 power, care, and attention which the Government
 manifest to  all alike in spite of these tribal difficul-
 ties, we are led to suppose that they now see that
 when a body of men such as constitute our House
 of Assembly are called together by the voice of the
 whole people, such body of men are, in all they dp
 or enact, influenced by a sincere desire to work for
 the good of the Maori  as well as the. European
 That through the change of ideas, and by the experi-
 ence of the various views which these men take of
 any one  subject, wise and beneficial decisions are
 the certain result of their deliberations. Hence we
 are lead to assert that those of such body to whom
 are entrusted the rule, or who  are called the Go-
 vernment, being subject to the counsel and criticism
 of the whole body of which the Parliament con-
 sists, must be guided not only by the counsel given.
 by that whole body, but by a dread to do anything
 which would  not be for the lasting benefit of the
 people  of New  Zealand.   Everything which  has
 taken place, not only at the meeting of Sir George
 Grey, as representing the Government,   with Ta-
 whiao at Waikato,  and  at Waitara with Rewi, has
 been based not only on  the unlimited knowledge
 possessed by the Premier  of the  transition state of
 the Maori mind, and of his knowledge of the wants
 of  the Maori people, but also in perfect accordance
 with the promptings  of the leading minds of the
 present age, of which he himself is not one  whit
  behind the greatest.
i   We  have no wish to            the statement imme-
 diately to be made to Parliament of the splendid
| results in the interest of peace and good govern-
i ment which  have directly been reaped from these
! well timed meetings. But  this much we may say,
  that for years past the tribes of Waikato have been
 waiting for some one in whom they had confidence,

 and whose memory held the knowledge of what the
 Maori was what he is, and what  his longings
 pompted him to be, who could appear before them,
 and, like a magician, dispel the gloom of distrust and
 sullen despair from their minds.  For years past
 the--Maori people, especially those in Waikato, have
 been kept isolated, not so much from the wish to be
 singular, and to maintain  themselves as a distinct
 peddle from the Europeans, as from the feeling of
 semi-serfdom which one part of those experienced in
 being dependent upon  the suffrages of the others
 of  their own race  but not of  their own  tribe.
 Again,  the  dominant   tribes felt the  constant
 dread  of evil which might arise from the occu-
 pation of part  of their lands by a  people who
 were  forced  by  past circumstances  to  live as
 intruders in  the district of which they  held not
 any mana   or  right; hence  the years of sullen
 silence maintained  by  two great sections of the
 Maori people.   The outside European public have
 not been aware of the many and constant approaches
 to  open  tribal disturbances which  these sections
 have been liable to since the war from the overbear-
 ing acts or the thoughtlessness of either. Not only
 was  the cultivation of the land cultivated by the
 people—in  itself the establishment of a quasi-owner-
 ship, one of the sore points upon which the owners
 of the land felt annoyed, but trees for canoes, eel
 weirs occupied, and other Maori rites, all of which
 could not  be absolutely prohibited, but the  very
 allowance of which established in the mind of the
 giver of any privilege a suspicious jealousy or even
 hatred of one who, in taking the gift, had possibly
 established a perpetual right against himself, or his
 tribe.  For  the  solution  of this difficulty the
 isolated tribes of Waikato   have  waited  for years.
 Sir George  Grey, with his characteristic force, has
 seen the advantages of his position as Premier, and
 at these two meetings has offered to Rewi and
 Tawhiao  an opportunity for the mutual discussion
 of all these difficulties, through himself, to which we
 have alluded in such  a way as to point out the
remedy  to them, and to show in what manner a
 continuance of apparent serfdom of one part of the
people to the other can be avoided, and a home free
from the intrusion of landless men may be obtained.
He   has  also shown  that  wise rulers—Maori   or
European—are    the praise of those who do good,
arid a dread of the evil-doer.

   A  correspondent writing from Te  Wairoa  to the
 Hawke's Bay  Herald says :—
   " The Maoris have a large pah on the north bank of
 the river, where they set an example which, the Euro 
 peans would do well to imitate, in that they have a
 spacious church erected for public worship, where an
 ordained clergyman  (a  native) has  ministered for
 many years.

 DEATH    OF THE   REV. KAREWINI    WAITI.
    The late Rev. Karewini Waiti was the eldest son of
  the Rev. Hoani  Waiti, Wesleyan  Minister of Kaipara.
  Being a Christian young man, and  giving promise of
  ability as a preacher of the Gospel, he was sent by
  tie Rev. W. Gittos to Wesley College, Three Kings,
 Auckland,' which was opened in 1876 for the training-
  of English and Maori students for the work of the
  ministry. Uere  for two  years he diligently pursued
 his studies, and regularly preached the Gospel to his
  fellow students, to the Maori prisoners in the Auck-
  land gaol, and occasionally to tie Maoris in the dis-
  trict of Hellensville. As a preacher he was extremely
  earnest and remarkably fluent, and enjoyed in a rich.
  measure the gift of the Holy Ghost.  Often  his audi-
  ences Were  melted  to tears as they listened to his
  earnest discourses. To himself preaching was a per-
  fect rapture, He looked forward with  great delight
  to the time when, having  completed  his studies, his
  whole life would be devoted to  the great work of
  winning souls. The Wesleyan  Conference of Janu-
  ary, 1878, decided to station him in the Kaipara dis-
  trict as  assistant Maori  minister to  the  Rev.  W.
  Gittos, English  minister to  the Maoris.   Whilst  the
  Conference  was in session he was taken very ill with
  congestion of the lungs. He  was  then at Kaipara,
 having gone home  to spend his holidays.  Having
  partially recovered,  he returned to the college, ex-
  pecting to be able in a short time to go back and take
  Charge of his circuit, But God had  other things in
  store for him. In about three weeks he was again
  taken very ill, and the doctor said he was far gone in
  consumption.   I  pass by  many  interesting conver-
  sations  held  with  him   during  his  last sickness
  to  give an  account of his last hours.  On  Sun-
  day  evening, May 12, he was much  worse, and ap-
  peared  to be sinking fast.  I went  to his bedside
  shortly before midnight, and just in time to hear him
  say feebly, " This the day the God rest from his work,
  this the day I rest at the right hand of God." He
  longed  to depart, and frequently said, " Come, my
  Jesus, come, my Jesus, from the skies, and take my
  spirit."  Suddenly  thinking of  his former life he
  remarked," O  God, I was  very wicked before, now
Jesus loves me."  On  Monday morning  several of his
  fellow students came to see him, but being too ill to
  converse  with  them  he requested them  to pray.
  During the  prayer he frequently said " Amen,'* with
  great fervour, proving that he understood all that was
said.  Just after the last prayer, he started the hymn,
" O happy  day that fixed my choice," but he broke
down  in the first line, not having strength, to continue.
We  who  were by his side continued singing the first
verse, he joining in occasionally. During  Monday
and Tuesday  he  said but very little, being delirious
and suffering great pain.  On  Tuesday evening, just
after the doctor had been and had given him up, he
requested me  to pray  with him.   This request for
prayer  was  the last request he  made.  He   sank
rapidly during  the night, and  at half-past three
o'clock on Wednesday  morning, as I held him by the
hand, he looked into my face and smiled, and then
turned his face to  the pillow. There  was a slight
quiver, and all was over. Jesus had come and taken
his spirit. He  is happy   now  in Heaven.   1 write
this hoping that all the Maoris who read it will love
and serve the same Jesus, and then, by and bye, they
will  live with  him in Heaven.  —  Communicated,

 tetahi moni kaua e iti iho i te £300 i te tau hei oranga mo
 te kura hei utu i te Kai-whakaako hei whakapai  i te
 whenua.  Kahore taua kura i whakaturia. Heoi ano nga
 hipi i hokona e 250 te take he nui no te utu o te hipi i
 reira. Ko te moni utu tau ra i timata i te 1854 tae noa ki
 te 1859. I roto i enei tau i ora ano tetahi kura ; ahakoa
 kihai i maha nga tamariki i tae atu i nui ano i runga i te

 kura, tetahi hoki he nui  te raruraru i puta mai  i te
 weranga ki te ahi, ka mutu te whakahaere kura, Ko ta
 nga Kai-whakahaere whakaaro i muri iho nei he whaka-
 pai i te whenua  kia puta ake ai he moni  e tika ai hei
 oranga mo tetahi kura. Ko nga hua i waho atu o nga

 whakaea i nga moni i nama a kei te takoto te rongotaima
i runga i te whenua i te mutunga o te tau 1868, £767 7s

 Notice by me, by Te Hapuku, respecting the Lake
  Poukawa, that it shall not be Drained after my
  Death.

   The following is a law made by me, by Te Hapuku, which
 shall be an unalterable law for my lands at Te Hauke which
 have rot passed through the Native Lands Court, and this
 law shall be a law to all future generations.
   Friend, the Editor of TE WANANGA,   publish this, my
 notice, to all the world, and let it go over all the world, so
 that all the tribes who live on these islands may see it, that
 is, all the Maori and European people. Let it appear in the
 Maori and English languages.                           ••
   Now, this is my word : That the Poukawa Lake shall not
 be touched or meddled with by European or Maori, nor shall
 anyone  dig or make a drain by which the water shall escape
 from the lake), and thereby cause the lake to dry up. I
 will not be right or just if any person whatever assume any
 right or authority over my lands. I have a name ; I have
 authority over all the lands which I own, and this portion I
 now  hold is very small—it is Te Hauke only—so  that this
  portion shall be left as it was in days gone by, according to
 Maori customs and rights. And let no Crown grant, no inves-
 tigation by the Native Lands Court be made or held for this
 land, Te Hauke, and on to Poukawa Lake, which is now held
  according to Maori right, so that this, my Maori Law, shall
  take effect on it, as such law was the law of my ancestors for
 ages past and even down to the days in which I, Te Hapuku,
  have lived.
   Friend, the Editor of TE WANANGA, send my law to Sir G.
  Grey, that he may  approve of this, my Maori law. But I
  have power over my own lands. Let this notice be published
  each Saturday of the months of a/1 the year 1878.
    This is the word of the meeting of old chiefs in support of
  the words of Te  Hapuku, and  it is true that we heard his
  words that not any  European should meddle with  or cut
  drains, so that the water of the Lake Poukawa could escape,

 and thereby drain that lake. And the reasons for his words
 are these : This land has not been passed through the Native
 Lands Court, there has not been a Crown grant issued for it,
 and it is held by Native title, as he, Te Hapuku, is the sole
 holder (Crown grant) of this land, and Te Hapuku  is the
 Native  Mana  of this land, and such right to this land has
 been that by which this land has been held from the grand-
 fathers who held it in ages past, and even down to us the off-
 spring of those ancient owners. Let not any person assume
 any right  to ignore this Maori law, as Renata Tamakihi-
 kurangi has made  this law  steadfast on Te Hauke, as it is
 land at Te Hauke, which is held by Maori custom, and it
 includes all the land all around the margin  of the Lake
 Poukawa.  In some future time the boundaries of the land
 held under Maori right will be given, that is, all the Hauke
 lands and all around the lake, over which this Maori law
 shall have effect.
   Now, O Editor of TE WANANGA,  be quick and put this
 notice into TE WANANGA,  so that it may be seen by the
 Maori and European  public.
   Let this notice be published ou each Saturday of the months
 in the year 1878. Enough, from all the committee which is
 now being held at Te Hauke.
