THE  letter from our Maori friends at Turanganui
(Gisborne), which we publish in this weeks issue, is
not  likely  to escape  very  general  notice.  We
gladly insert the advertisement signed  by Messrs.
Macfarlane  and Williams   for no coarser considera-
tion than may be gathered by the study of the in-
herent  virtue therein  contained.  Besides which,
 gratuitous advertisements are rather the fashion just
 now, and we see no reason why TE WANANGA
 should be one whit behindhand in the race of osten-
 tatious generosity, even when  the van  is led by
 such great lights as the " New Zealand Times" and
 the " Canterbury Press.""  It is balm  to our lace-
 rated instincts—for less innocent than our great con-
 temporaries we cannot on the instant become gladly
 generous—to  know  that in aiding the proclamation
 of the generous sentiments entertained by Messrs.
 Macfarlane  and Williams, we are assisting the cause
 of problematic virtue, of primal simplicity, and of
 long latent commercial morality ; somewhat autumn
 fruits these, worth an effort if so be that they may
 be acclimatised in, what we must be allowed to say,
  is a most unpromising soil.
    The  quiet raillery of our Maori friends needs no
  commentary.  Come  unto Mr. G. Lawrence all ye
  claimants.   A  free breakfast  table is the  talk of
  politicians who swim knee deep in scientific puddles,
  very much  to their own satisfaction, but in truth to
  the sad discoloration of the water. A free legal table
  provided by the representatives of the litigant most
  interested, spread  out by Mr.  G.  Lawrence,  is
  something  quite outside the resources of incipient
   science or prehistoric barbarism. We  fear Mr.  G.
  Lawrence  will have to use some mild compulsion in
   defiance of his orders before his table will be filled
                                                                                                           
   with claimants  for " every consideration and  im-
   partial justice" The Maoris having found out that
   by the first squeeze of the somewhat acrid lawyer's
   hand, a vague offer of future justice has been ex-
   tracted if only  the  bulldogs of the  law are re-
   strained, will be naturally of opinion that they have
   rights which lawyers only can advise them of, and
   of which, at any rate, lawyers are not so likely to
   deprive them  as irresponsible advisers with an im-
    mense  personal interest presiding at a free legal
    table in the  district of Turanganui  (Gisborne).
    Did it not occur to the advertisers that on the face
    of their advertisement there was an admission that
    there were cases which should  be subjects of fair
    enquiry—that  they admitted there might be claims
    of morality and even of justice ; that frauds, inten-
    tional or unintentional, might have been committed;
    that  the  Maoris, in  the primeval innocence  of
    the  early  settlers, might have  been   wronged.

that  sacred  right might  have   been  trampled
upon,  and ignorance  taken advantage of. If in
such advertisement there are such admissions, why
attempt to beguile the Maori from taking advantage
of responsible advice. Will these new representatives
of primal  Christianity", who hold  out  the  olive
branch  of  equitable justice, without  professional
advice on the weaker side, as between man and man
in judgment of past deeds, allow us to ask them a
question ?  Would  they deal with their own lands
which  they held by  undisputed title without the
advice of the Pakeha lawyer ? If they would, then
are they justified in asking their Maori  disputants
to do so likewise.  Then  will we believe the invita-
tion to come to Mr. G. Lawrence for free advice to
be candid and  disinterested. Until  this new  doc-
trine is accompanied by its original complement of
community  of goods volunteered by, and on behalf
of, those who preach it, we advise our Maori friends
not to attach much faith to it, even though attested
by  such  very  highly  respectable  signatories as
Messrs.  Macfarlane and  Williams.

         NATIVE  NEWS  OF WAIKATO.
   Information from Native sources from  Waikato  speaks
strongly of the decline of Tawhiao's  influence. The  old
Maori mode  of worship, as amended and taught by him,
is becoming unpopular. He  endeavored to got Te Kooti
to join this faith, but  the  latter refused. The  religion
taught  by Te  Kooti, founded  on portions of the Old
Testament, is becoming more  popular every day. Many
pilgrimages are being made  to the high priest, who pro-
phesies his return  to this district, his birthplace, within
three years.—H.  B. Herald.

            GIGANTIC   CRAYFISH.
   A  most  distinguished visitor arrived in the  Colonial
Museum   a few  days ago, and  has taken up his abode
there permanently. His name is a nasty one to pronounce
or write at first—Pelimtrus Hiigehi it is not so bad
when  one gets  used to it. He  is a gigantic crayfish,
 measuring nearly three feet in length, and about two feet
 across his outstretched legs.   This crustacean  monster
was one of several caught when  the Hinemoa  was at
 Wangaroa  Harbour,  in the extreme north of this island.
All were eaten but this one, which was preserved for the
 Museum,  and has been  duly installed in its case by Dr.
 Hector, who pronounces it a very  great rarity, and the
 only specimen of its kind in any museum.   Hitherto it
 has only been met with occasionally in the Indian Ocean,
 and it was not known to be among the denizens of these
 seas.  It is worth  a visit.—Post.

Speech  of Wi Pere at a Meeting held on
   the 3Oth April, 1878, at Turangunui
    ( Gisborne), to obtain assistance for
    the stipend of the Maori Minister of
    the Church in that district.
  A  meeting was  held  to collect money  for the Maori
minister of the Church of England at Gisborne, and these
arc the words of Wi Pere  which he spoke to  his people.
That all the land which has been sold to the Europeans
be  put into the hands of Wi  Pere  and his solicitor, Mr.
W.   L. Rees, so that he (our solicitor) may take action iu
accordance with the law in regard to any of these lands
which  have  not been dealt justly with.
  Second.  That  a committee  be formed,  to consist of
six chiefs, who are  be trustees for these lands, so that
no person may  sell any of these lands after they had been
handed  over to these trustees. And  that these trustees
 have the sole power to act with those lands, in order that
the proceeds of such lease or cultivation may be received
 by the  owners   of  those lands.   That  the trustees
 may cause to be built all fences, viz., cattle and sheep, or
mako  those lands into farms, to bring in a yearly rental
for the owners ; and when this is done, you, the owners,
are to have the proceeds, by which you can live, and by
 which you can occupy  some of these lands when  they
 have been  regained from  those who  now  hold them
unjustly.  Such trustees alone can do for the owners that
by  which the Maori people can obtain a living for them-
 selves and their children, and by which the Maori people
 can enjoy some of the good which  the Europeans now
 live on.
   Third. Do not let any doubt arise in your minds in re-
 gard to the fees for our solicitor. I will act to him of my
 own love, so that the poor and orphans may be by my
 love cared for even as it was in the days  of our fore-
 fathers, who have gone into silence, and who left these
 lands for us, that by these lands we might live like chiefs
 in this world. I wish to say that Sir D. M'Lean asked Te-
 Kani-a-Takirau and Raharu-hi-Rukupo to sell Turanganui
 (Gisborne) to him, but they would not consent to the re-
 quest of Sir D. M'Lean, but Te Kari gave a horse to Sir
 D M'Lean instead of the land he asked for, and the name
 of that horse was 'Toko-Rakau" (walking-stick). And
 we have disregarded the love of those two chiefs, and we
 are now in poverty and sorrow. I say let us be quiet and
 brave, and let us not make orphans of our children.
   Fourth. Our  solicitor Mr. Rees, has drawn up a docu-
 ment by which these lands are to be held by us, so that
 not any of us may be ensnared into selling any of these
 lands.
   Fifth : Be brave and do not accept any money  as a
 bribe to sell your lands to evil designing Europeans, as
 has been the case in days past. Such Europeans did not
 say that they had some more money for us, but now whea
 our lawyer has come, those Europeans offer money to us,

     Friend, salutations. Will you publish our letter in the
  WANANGA,   that it may be seen by Mr. Macfarlane and the
   Rev Leonard  Williams, the executors of the late Captain
  Read, that our words may  also be seen by all the Euro-
   peans and Maoris of the district. These are their words :
   —"  Notice.  Claims  against the estate of the  late G. E.
   Read   The executors being anxious to settle all claims
   against the above estate, invite claimants to send their
  demands  under cover to Mr.  George Lawrence  when
   every equitable claim will be considered and settled in the
   most liberal spirit. The attention of Natives  and  others
   having claims for shares or part shares in land is par-
   ticularly requested to this  notice, the executors being

                     TE WANANGA.
S. MacFarlane, W. L. Williams.   Gisborne, 3rd  June, 
 1878. Now, listen to our words: We have seen the
 advertisement  of Messrs. Macfarlane  and Williams   stat-
 ing that they, the " executors of the late Captain Read I
 are anxious to arrange quietly " all matters pertaining to
 the lands purchased by him  from  the Natives, that our
 money be not consumed by the lawyers in the event of
 going to  law.  Our reply is this : We do not approve
 of that  advertisement  of Messrs. Macfarlane  and Wil-
 liams, and for this reason—It is now seven or eight years
 that we have borne our wrongs with regard to our lands.
 During the whole of that time never a single word was
 said to us to arrange amicably the difficulties in connec-
 tion with our lands that have been unjustly wrested from
 us by Head. Now  we ourselves have requested the lawyer
 to come to this district and act for us in the matter of our
 lands unfairly possessed by Road. Now,  indeed, for the
 first time bursts forth for us the; love of Read, that is—
 his executors.  Now,  also for the first time do we witness
 their great consideration for us in  regard to our lands,
 and lest our money should be spent in law and lawyers.
 Our opinion is this, that within this love of Read for us
there is mischief  {i.e., a desire to prevent  the Natives
 availing themselves  of what  they  are now  obtaining,
 namely, legal advice). Our word therefore is this—From
 us was the call for the lawyer to come here and act on
 our behalf. If the executors of the late Captain Read are
 really anxious  of  settling equitably the  difficulties, let
 them  write to our lawyer, or to his friends in our office in
 Gisborne, or to us, the originators of this letter.—From
 Wi  Pere, Raniera Turoa, Anaru Matete, Eru Pohatu. Be-
 cause we have been fully authorised by all the Native chiefs
 and people to conduct any  and all matters in regard to
 settlement of  disputes of whatever  nature or  kind in
 regard to lands bought or in any way dealt with by Euro-
 peans in Turanganui.

             To THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA.
     Friend, salutations to you. Friend, put these words in your
   WANANGA   by way of cargo. These are my  goods as cargo
   for you. The New Zealand Herald asks, what is the cause of
   us. the Natives of New Zealand,  dying off so fast in these
   days ? And this is my answer to that question -. The Euro-
   peans are the cause of the death of us, the Maori people. In
   the days before the Europeans came to these islands of New
   Zealand, that thing—death—was  not known to the old men.
   The death the Maori of old died of was being killed iu war :
   then they knew death. And men were bewitched, and then
   they knew death,  Man  was turned over (drowned) in the
   water, then the Maori  knew  death.   Man was  murdered  in
   those days, then he knew death, and only by these did man
   know what death was. But the old mea of those days went

 (lived) on to the time of extreme old age, and then they died.
 But this generation of Maori  people, in these days of the
 European people, weakness comes over children, and the old
 people, and the very old, and the females, who do not arrive
 at the age of manhood. Hence I say the cause is with the
 Europeans why the Maori dies.  It is in the European food,
 it is in the European clothing, in the rum, in tobacco. Now
 let us look, in the Maori days of old. there was not any tea,
 not any flour, any bread, not any pepper, not any mustard,
 not any butter, nor was there any pots in which to cook their
 food.  And there were not any board houses, there were not
 any beds to sleep in, there were not any blankets, or trousers,
 not any shirts, not any boots, not any hats or caps, not any
 stockings  with them of old days but their food was fern-
 root, sow thistle, kumara, ti-root, taro, hue, and the meat they
 ate was fish, eels, birds, dog. and man also in the times when
 they fought each other. And  those  sorts of food they ate
'••. indiscriminately. They did not use salt with this sort of food,
  but they ate it when it was hot. or ate all these sorts of food
  when they were cold. And their clothing was not like the
  European clothing, and then their body was hard, and disease
  did not come to them. But when the European came, and
  these sorts of things which they were accustomed to for ages
  past were neglected, and when they  turned from their old
  ways of living, and followed the customs of the Europeans,
  but as they, the Maoris, could not follow anything the Euro-
  peans did, could not fully carry out all the European customs
  of living, as the Maori did drink tea some days, and some days
  he did not drink tea, he, the Maori, did eat salt some days,
  and some days he did not eat salt, and the Maori clothed him-
  self with drawers in some days, and some days he did not, he
  put boots on his feet some days, and some days he did not put
  boots on his feet, some days he put flannel on his body, and
  some days he.did not wear flannel, but the Maori is trying to
  do even as the European does, but the Maori cannot accom-
  plish this, and hence by this disease comes (or is invited) from
  the European to eat up the Maori, on account of the Maori
  nob being able to carry out fully all the customs of the Euro-

  attended by the old Maori priest doctor, who are attended to
  by  these old Maori priests, who, if they do not do all that is
  ordered by the Maori priest, and if the  sick do recever, as
   they have not done  all that was ordered, the sickness will
  come back to them in some days to come ; even so the Maori
  is not able to do all that the customs of the Europeans pro-
   scribe in regard to European food, hence the food so used by
   the Maori turns on the Maori and kills him. Do you put this
  in TE WANANGA   so that the New Zealand Herald may see my
   answer to his question. I have a great deal more to say, but
   I will send it for some future issue of our WANANGA to print

  Notice by me, by Te Hapuku, respecting the Lake
   Poukawa, that it shall not be Drained after my
   Death.
    The following is a law made by me, by Te Hapuku, which
  shall be an unalterable law for my lands at Te Hauke which
  have not passed through the Native Lands Court, and this
   law shall be a law to all future generations.
    Friend, the Editor of TE W ANANGA,  publish  this my
   notice, to all the world, and let it go over all the world, so
   that all the tribes who live on these islands may see it, that
   is all the Maori and European people. Let it appear in the
   Maori and English languages,
    Now, this is my word : That the Poukawa Lake shall not
   be touched or meddled with by European or Maori, nor shall
   anyone dig or make a drain by which the water shall escape
   from the lake}, and thereby canoe the lake to dry up,

will not be right or just if any person whatever assume any
right or authority over my lands. I have a name ; I have
authority over all the lands which I own, and this portion I
now hold is very small—it is Te Hauke  only—so  that this
portion shall be left as it was in days gone by, according to
Maori customs and rights. And let no Crown grant, no inves-
tigation by the Native Lands Court be made or held for this
land, Te Hauke, and on to Poukawa Lake, which is now held
according to Maori right, so that this, my Maori Law, shall
take effect on it, as such law was the law of my ancestors for
ages past and even down to the days in which I, Te Hapuku,
have lived.
  Friend, the Editor of TE WANANGA, send my law to Sir G.
Grey, that he  may  approve of this my Maori law. But I
have power over my own lands. Let this notice be published
each Saturday of the mouths of all the year 1878
  This is the word of the meeting of old chiefs in support of
the words  of Te Hapuku,  and  it is true that we heard his
words  that not any  European  should meddle with  or cut
drains, so that the water of the Lake Poukawa could escape,
and thereby drain that lake. And the reasons for his words
are these : This land has not been passed through the Native
Lands  Court, there has not been a Crown grant issued for it,
and it is held by Native title, as he, Te Hapuku, is the sole
holder (Crown  grant) of this land, and Te Hapuku is the
Native  Mana  of this land, and such right to this land has
been that, by which this land has been held from the grand-
fathers who held it in ages past, and even down to us the off-
spring of those ancient owners. Let not any person assume
 any right to ignore this Maori law, as Renata Tamakihi-
kurangi has  made  this law steadfast on Te Hauke, as it is
land at Te Hauke,  which is held by  Maori custom, and it
includes all the land all around the margin  of the Lake
 Poukawa.  In some future time the boundaries of the land
 held under Maori right will be given, that is, all the Hauke
lands and all around  the lake, over which this Maori law
 shall have effect.
   "Now. O Editor of TE WANANGA,   be  quick and put this
 notice into TE WANANGA, so that it may be seen by the
 Maori and European public.
   Let this notice be published ou each Saturday of the months
 in the year 1878. Enough, from all the committee which is
 now being held at Te Hauke.
