   NGA MEA O MUA

I NGA ra o mua, i te takiwa o te Pakeha ki ano i tino
tini i enei motu, i mea nga Pakeha tautoko, kahore
he Ture, kahore he tikanga e oti pai ai nga mahi he
o nga motu nei. A i mea ana Pakeha tauhou, na
mana tangata i kawe te tikanga e oti ai ki ta te
tangata e pai ai. He tika ano ia, i aua ra, kahore
ano nga ingoa nei, te Kingi, te Kawanatanga, me te
moni i rangona ki konei. He mea hoki, he tupeka,
he paipa, he hate, he paraikete te moni hoko o aua ra.
Otiia, he Pakeha nui ano tetahi Pakeha o aua ra. A
i Tokerau aia e noho ana. A ko te ingoa nui o taua
Pakeha " He Piritihi Retinana." A i aua ra ano
toki i ki nga rangatira Maori, ko ratou te hunga hei
mahi i nga mea mo te iwi. A i mea aua rangatira
Maori i aua tau i te 1835, ma ratou e tiaki te tikanga
ki te iwi. A i aua ra, he whare peeke ano to Tokerau,
a ko taua peeke te whare takotoranga moni tua-tahi
kitea ki enei motu. Toko-toru ano nga Pakeha whai
moni o ana ra, na ratou i tu a taua peeke, a he kotahi
anake te Tumuaki o taua peeke, me tana Karaka kai-
tuhituhi, a toko-rua rawa ano raua, na raua i whaka-
haere nga mahi o taua peeke. A i mahi tiaki ano
taua peeke i nga moni o te iwi i aua ra. Ano ka tae
ki to wa i hono tonu ai te u ruai o nga kaipuke weera
ki Kororareka, ka ahua ke te whakaaro a te kai-tiaki
o taua, peeke. A no te po o tetahi ra, i eke ai te
kai-tiaki o taua peeke, me nga moni ana e tiaki ai, ki
noa he Perehi taa nupepa a te Pakeha i nga Motu nei,
a he mea kohikohi e nga Pakeka o Kororareka nga
moni hei hoko Perehi taa nupepa ma ratou. A tu
ana te nupepa Pakeha i aua ra, kahore he tauhou a te
hoa Pakeha kia ratou Pakeha, he mohio te mohio a te
iwi kia ratou katou, a ko te mahi a taua nupepa he ta-
wai i nga mahi ahua Maori a te Pakeha i aua ra o mua, a
be kata kau ta te iwi ki nga Korero a ta ratou nu-
pepa. A kihai i roa, ara i te tau 1840, ka kiia kia tu
he Kawana mo nga Motu nei, a tu ana a Kapene Ho-
pihana hei Kawana, koia hoki te Kawana tua-tahi.
A ko te wahi i u mataati ai taua Kawana, ko Okiato i
Tokerau. A k hai i roa, ka ahua tawai taua nupepa
a nga Pakeha Maori ki nga Apiha a te Kawanatanga,
a riri ana aua Apiha, he mea hoki na taua nupepa o
Kororareka, e penei aua nga Apiha a te Kawanatanga
o aua ra, me te hoiho koroheke, he penei ratou me te
hoiho too kaata, kua ruhi noa iho te mahi, kua kuia-
tia. A no te tino kiinga a aua Apiha kia whakawa-
kia taua nupepa, i mutu ai te taa o taua nupepa. A.
koia ra te mutunga o te peeke me te nupepa tuatahi
o nga Motu nei. No muri tata iho i heke mai ai taua
ropa Apiha, me te Kawana ki Waitemata noho ai.
He mea hoki na Apihai te Kawau raua ko te Timana
i karangu te Pakeha ki Waitemata, koia ra te take i
tu ai te Taone o Akarana i Hauraki.

               SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1878.

                   THINGS THAT WERE
IN the time when some of the visitors to New Zea-
land vainly imagined that New Zealand was ruled by
club law, viz., " that might was right," in the days
when the names King, Government, or Sovereign
were not heard in our then so-called " Cannibal
Land," we could boast of a British resident. We
could then speak of our " Confederation of chiefs,"
who assumed the right to hold New Zealand as intact
against the intermeddling of mushroom-politicians. In
those days (1835) we could boast of a bank. At the
time of which we speak the three monied, men, and
the only men in New Zealand then who had any
cash, formed themselves into a firm, and under their
auspices they opened a bank in the Bay of Islands.
For some time the bank carried on business for all the
then world of New Zealand—that is for a small
village called Kororareka (the sweet penguin). The
manager was a subject of the stars and stripes, who
with one clerk were the only members of the so-called

" Bank of New Zealand." At that time the Bay of
Islands was the resort of the whalers which plied for oil
for the American people in these seas. One fine morn-
ing the doors of the bank were not opened at the
usual hour, and on enquiry it was found that
the manager, only clerk, and the cash box, with
all the etceteras of the bank had taken a trip
unauthorised in an American whaler to the North
Pole, in order, as some of the non-shareholders of the
bank surmised, to opeti a branch with the Esquimauxs.
About the same time, some of our literary men of
that day put a few shillings together and bought a '
printing press, and issued a paper called the Say of \\
Islands Observer, which for a long time was the only
newspaper  in these islands. As we were a people at, ;
that time, each knew the other and all were known 1
to everybody, our local scribblers amused themselves
with puns and wit on their friends, to the intense
amusement of the whole public of the small village
but in 1840 strangers came into our midst A cap-
tain of one of our English men of-war was appointed I
Governor of New Zealand. Our only newspaper
of course, could not at once get out of the groove of
fun and wit. and it immediately published a notice of
a sale of broken down horses, which was to take place
at Okiato (the then seat of Government iu the Bay
of Islands). Some of the—to us strange beings— I
Government officials imagined they were lampooned
by this notice, and out of their wrath came threats of
actions of law, a subject to which we, the ancients of
New Zealand, had in our absence from civilisation
forgotten. These ominous words sent a thrill of
horror into all and sundry others who were concerned
in the little newspaper, and from this came a disease
which sunk the soul. body, and name of our bantling
into oblivion. Thus the first bank eloped, and thus
perished the first newspaper of New Zealand.

    EXPERIMENTS WITH POTATO SETS.
   A French agricultural journal, the " Basse-Cour,/""
describes the result of some experiments in potato
growing recently conducted by scientific men iu Ger-
many. The principal conclusions to which these
sages have come seem to be two in number. The
first of them is that the vigour of the potato plant is
always in direct proportion to the weight of the tuber-
used for sets—a theory which certainly finds some
support in common sense alone, considering that the
young shoots for some time draw their sole nourish-
ment from the mother potato. The second con-
clusion is that there is a great variety in the produc-
tive power, not only of different tubers, but also of
different eyes in the same potato. It was found that
the eye at the top of the potato produce a much more-
vigorous offspring than those in the lower part, and
the consequence is that those agriculturists who cu
their potatoes in half before planting them are not
well advised in cutting vertically, but should always

6 178

                            TE WANANGA.
divide them horizontally, planting the upper half and
using the other as food for cattle. But the best plan
of all is to plant the tuber whole, cutting out, never-
theless, all the eyes except those in the top part.
Experiments were conducted in a garden soil by Pro-
fessor Gautz, the amount of crop produced by several
different settings of potatoes being accurately esti-
mated in statistical tables. It appeared that from
tubers divided vertically only 5 tons were produced
per acre, and from whole potatoes 7½ tons. Tho third
sort were potatoes horizontally divided, which are
set down as having produced 9£ tons. In this par-
ticular however, some of the other Professors do not
Agree with Herr Gantz, but maintain that, other
things being equal, the whole potatoes will always
produce more than halves, however cut. On the
fourth result, however, all agree, and that is, that the
whole potatoes from which the lower eyes have been
cut out produce 11½ tons, per acre or more than double
the results shown by the sets first mentioned.—' Fi-
 nancial Opinion.'

                      TE WANANGA.
10th and 13th verses.) But you, who are called Porou"
rangi, will be remembered, and we shall call to mind the
cause by which this second of our canoes was broken,
namely, the Gospel (neglected by us for a time). But
the great reason for holding our meeting in the year 1872
at Mataahu was to hoist the Union Jack, but the speeches
made on that occasion were, that we should worship only
one God, and that we should believe only in Him, and
that we should have but one Queen, and that was Vic-
toria, and that we should obey her laws. And at that
great meeting we agreed to build our churches once
more, and that we should open schools for our children,
and to make the roads, The roads have been made in our
district, and we have built a church at Uawa, at Whare-
panga, and the church which we this day have conse-
crated. But there are some districts in which we have
not yet built churches. We have also had schools opened,
which was done after the meeting at Mataahu. But at
Tuparoa one is wanting, and at Hatepe there has been
two masters appointed, but in the year 1876 it was given
up, and the reason was that the children would not go to
that school. But the evil is with the parents of the chil
dren, who are thoughtless people, and hence the schools
are given up. There was also another important matter
to which Major Ropata called our attention at the great
meeting at Mataahu. It was in regard to the influence
of the moon in the Maori months, when the stars Aurei,
Tirea, Kopu, Parearau, Matariki, and Whanui are in the
ascendant, which are the emblems used in the flag, and
all those matters are for us, as we fully understand them.
Also, in regard to one side of a stone. There were many
apt references in the simile of that stone which applied te
us as men. But from that year, 1872, to the present year,
1878, we have not been growing in good works in our
church of the district. There is a great deadness io our
worship. These words are not spoken to you for the
first lime, hut yon have heard them in all our great meet-
ings, and this is to remind you of what was then spoken
to you, even as the Apostle Jude did (see the 5th chapter
of the Book) : " All Israel waa saved when God saved
Israel in Egypt. And all the people had sent to them
what they asked of their friends, of the Egyptians, which
was by the permission of God done. And all the children
of Israel were saved it» the Red Sea. And God saved
them for their faith, but the Egyptians He devoured.
But when they went into the wilderness some of them
were killed, and the cause of their death was, because
they had forsaken God." And even so with us. If we
forsake God, He will cast us off.
The Rev. Ramana Kowhia rose, and also Henare Potae
and Major Ropata, and many other chiefs spoke. The
speeches which they made I will and at some future
time. On the 19th another meeting waa held, when
Henare Potae spoke against the use of spirits, as also
many of the chiefs and people condemned the use of such
  evil drink.
To the Editor of TE WANANGA : Give a place iu your
paper for these words; I have sent them to you.—Mohi
  TUREI TANGARO-APEAU (Rev. Mohi Turei).
