  THAT  which is now fully occupying the minds of the
  various tribes of New Zealand, viz., by whom can
  the rightful Maori owners obtain a title to their lands :
  leads us to make a few remarks on the constitution
  and  working  of the Native Lands  Court of this
  Colony.
    We  do not ignore the fact that it is the Lounden
  duty of the Crown to compel the  hereditary owners
  of  land, which lands have become  their property
  by  the acknowledged power of  laws or customs
   admitted  by  themselves,  to obtain a  title from
  the  Crown   in order to  entitle the Maori in New
   Zealand to execute a good and valid title to anyone
   to whom  he may alienate his land.
     Nor would we attempt to ignore the power of the
   European educated mind to grasp any argument or
matter to be investigated, which may be laid before it.
Nor would we deny that such power is superior and
better able to grapple with or solve a doubt which
may have been entangled by acts of savage life, than
a mind which has not been under the  influence of
civilized teaching. But we do demand  for the Maori
people that right to try, and by their own acknowledged
rules and customs to decide on questions relating to
titles to lands, in which the Maoris alone are interested.
The  educated mind  of the European  may  be far
superior to the Maori mind where matters under-con-
sideration aro not to be weighed by customs or known
and acknowledged  rites of a savage people, but where
the matter under consideration is the title to land (a
subject which,  for at least six hundred  years, has
been  a matter of life and  death with  the tribes of
New  Zealand) is the one point to which the judges in
such cases are to bring all the knowledge they possess
to bear, in order, and in accordance with the preamble
 to the Native Lands Court Act, which Act is the sole
 power and authority by which the Court can try and
 give any legal decision on or give any title to land tried
 by it. says, That all titles to land shall be tried in
 accordance with the manners and customs of the New
 Zealander. Such being the case, we most emphati-
 cally assert that there is not one European now, nor ever
 has been in New Zealand, who is sufficiently educated in.
 the manners and customs of the New Zealander to en-
 title him to act as a judge to try and to give a righteous
 and just decision in, or a title to laud claimed by the
 Maori.  We also  assert that those who may be conver-
 sant with the history, traditions, and customs of the
 Maori tribes of one part of New Zealand, admit that
 such knowledge does not suffice them to understand
 the claims to land put forward by the tribes of other
 parts of New Zealand. The Maori not only claims
 land by right of discovery and occupation, as the only
 three tribes of New Zealand can  do now, viz. : Te
 Arawa,  Ngatiporou, and Taranaki, but he also claims
 by  right of conquest, gift in marriage, gift for help in
 obtaining food  for leasts, help in time of sickness
 (or payment   to priests for supposed protection from
 the power of witchcraft), for the dead being carried
 over  the land, for relations murdered, on the land,
 and a thousand  other claims of such nature.  But
 there are other claims even  more complicated than
 these.  Gifts of chiefs of certain blocks to pet grand-
 children : also, the claims to land by the offspring
 (male line of descendants) of daughters (to land of
  their grandfathers) who have married chiefs of other
  tribes.
   We  feel this subject to be of such importance that
  we will revert to it in our next issue.

       MUMMIES  FOUND  AT KAWHIA.
     We  see that the Canterbury Times gives publicity to
   report" that a cave has been found in a cliff in one
   branch of the Kawhia harbor about 30 feet above the
   water level, in which a large number of mummies are
   to be seen.  The Maoris  deny all knowledge as to
   how they came there or who they are. They are not
   tattooed." Some  years since we  heard from  Mr.
   Todd (who  was murdered at Pirongia) that he had
   been, to the cave, and  from his account and  our
   knowledge of the history of the Maori people, and
   the  traditional account of a people  having prior to
   the Maori migration arriving in New Zealand, occupied
   this West Coast, East Cape, and North Cape districts,
   we do not doubt but the mummies  in question, if ex-
   amined by some of our learned in such matters, would
   lead to disclosures which would throw some light on
   the Maori  oral history of the prior inhabitants of New
   Zealand.

      RIGHT  VIEW OF  MINISTERS.
   The  progress  of the  Premier and  his Native
 Minister Northwards  appears to be quite a triumphal
 procession. Auckland  is in a high state of excitement
 in preparation for  a brilliant reception to the most
 popular public man that ever that province possessed,
 and even at Napier, that headquarters of land rings,
 and scene of brandied mortgages and plundered natives,
 the great  body of the people who  have  not been
 tainted with the prevalent corruption, but have seen it
 passing before their eyes, have given a right royal re-
 ception to  Ministers, whom  they doubtless regard as
 deliverers from that wretched  state of things which
 has made Hawkes Bay a bye-word and a shame through-
 out  the colonies. To Mr  Ormond,  the malignant
 slanderer of Sir George  Grey, and to the cotenes of
 land  sharks, who have  systematized the cheating of
 natives, which Mr  Sheehan  has been  for some years
 past engaged in bursting up, such an ovation must be
  particularly galling. It is the turning point in that
 history of  wrong, and  of connivance  at iniquity in
 high  places which must ever attach to Hawke's Bay;
  and like the \_ of a good moral drama, we
 trust that what is now to  come will show virtue in
 honour, and vice bringing its own meed of punishment.
  Hawkes  Bay has  been  appropriately selected as the
  scene for first celebrating the advent of  the new
  regime with eclat: for it has been the stronghold of
  wrong, the hot-bed of corruption, through the prosti-
  tution of official administration to personal aggrandise-
  ment. But  while  these jubilations are taking place in
  the North we  observe it intimated that the member
  of Government,  whom  we may  very fairly and fittingly
  call our own Minister,  Mr Macandrew,  leaves  Wel-
  lington to-day for Dunedin, Even as Sir George Grey

  captains (managers) of TE WANANGA.
    Will you and your Europeans give your clear thoughts to
  this our  letter of  request to  the  chief (editor) of  TE
  WANANGA, that he endeavor to find an European who is a
  thorough Maori  scholar, to take charge of the work of our
  paper (newspaper). As there is not any such European here at
  Otakau or at Tautahi, hence our request to Colonel McDonnell
  that he endeavor to find some European who thoroughly
  understands the Maori language, to take charge of the work
  of our printing press. That is all.
    We  have  sent a letter to the Honorable John Sheehan,
  and to Governor Grey, of which this is a copy for all of us

   To Sir George Grey, to the Hon. John Sheehan, Karaitiana
 Takamoana,  M.H.R.. Hoani  Nahe.  M.H.R., Kerei Taiaroa,
 M  H.R, the Hon. Wi Tako, and to all the members of Parlia-
 ment who  support Sir George Grey, and the new Government,
 may  your years be many  in life, and* may God guard and
 guide you. Those are our words of good which we wish for
you.
 On  the  4th of December  a great meeting was held at
 Motuiti, Foxton, which was attended  by the Ngatiraukawa
 tribes from Otaki and on to Rangitikei ? also, by the great
 tribes of Rangitane and Muaupoko. The subject discussed by
  this meeting was to support, and be glad in upholding the
 new  Government of Sir George Grey. We whose names are
  hereunder given) have agreed that this new Government
  should stand, and that it should be for the two islands of
  Aotearoa and Waipounamu (North and South Islands).
    This meeting passed a resolution that the old Government
  should be extinct for ever, as they have been the cause of
  evil to the two islands of New Zealand.  And  their laws
  have been pressing heavily on these two islands. They have
  not been kind parents, but have done evil, and from them
  have come the evils that now rest on the land, or on man.
  And the land cries aloud for the evil in it, and man cries
  aloud for the darkness before him, and the evil he bears. The
  words of the Apostle given in the 7th of Romans, and the
  24th verse are true (in this case). Enough.

          To THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA.
   Salutations to you. Friend, put this notice into your news
 paper, so that our thoughts may be known. These are on-
 thoughts.  We honor the Queen (or express our loyalty to our
 sovereign), and express our approbation of Sir George Grey,
 and to his Government, and to his colleagues in the Parlia-
 ment.  And  we know  that his Government will give their
 utmost consideration to those matters by which (to lighten)
 the yoke which has been laid on the Maori people, and (his
 Government)  will also use their best endeavors to lay down
 some line of policy by which quiet peace and plenty may be
 conveyed to both races who inhabit New Zealand. Hence,
 we  wish to inform all the world, that we (the tribes of Ngati-
 kahungunu)  will support and uphold the Government of Sir
 George Grey.
    We  also wish to give utterance to the  following words,
 which is to remind all the officers of the late Government,
 including also any who may be officers of the present Go-
  vernment, that all said officers refrain from coming to our
  settlements, or district, to speak to us on any matter, whether
  of great or little importance, because we have been ruined by
 the work of those men. If such officers do persist in coming
  into our districts, we will cause them to depart iu a manner
  disagreeable to themselves. Now (let such officers) take notice
 that we have spoken our  words, and we will not act in any
  other way than we have (herein) stated. We have fully con-
  sidered, and carefully pondered over all these matters.  All
 the  people who may  come  to us in accordance with our
 approval, will be the men of this Government and their new
 officers, who may not have been in the employ of the late
  Government.
    All the above was agreed to by us at a meeting at the
 Waiohiki on the night of the loth of this month (December),
  1877.
    This, therefore, is from us from  all the  tribes of Ngati-
 kahungunu, whose names are signed hereunder. But there ia
  one word more (we wish  to give  expression to). Let the
  tribes of these islands approve the following or not. Let your
  work be in accordance with ours, so that we may act at one
