TE WANANGA. kua ne io mana Paremata. E kore e mohiotia te he ranei o te Kawanatanga ranei, o nga Porowini ranei, otiia ka tino koa te iwi katoa, no te mea kua kore e hoki mai nga Mema o te Paremata; no ratou nei te mahi mo ratou ake ano, a kihai nei i mahi i te Pare- mata mo te iwi i tonoa ai, a no ratou te raana i noho ai ana Mema i te Paremata. A ko nga tino Mema e tika Wi Parata. noho ai hei Mema Paremata. He mea hoki na rana, kia tino puta tika he pai mo nga iwi Maori. Otiia kihai raua i noho kupu kore, engari i tino mahi ratia hei haumi i nga mahi katoa a Te Ka- wanatanga e hengia ana e nga iwi Maori. A ko rana pu ano te. hunga e kiia, he tino no te autaia rana ki te Maori. E tino whakapai pu ana matou ki nga. He mea i tahuri mai ano raua i whawhai mai ki a rana n i ; ngote ai. E toru hoki enei take hei kupukupu ano raa matou. Te Tua- tahi ko te kupu mo Kawana Kerei. He mea pooti a ia e te iwi mo te Taone o Akarana, a no muri iho ka kiia ano a ia hei Mema mo- te iwi naahi koura i Hau- raki, a tu ana a ia i te iwi i mua rawa o nga Pakeha katoa i tu kia poottiia e aua iwi keri koura. E mea | ana nga kai mahi o Te Kawanatanga, i he te pooti mo i Kawana Kerei mo Hauraki. A kua kiia te kupu a ana Pakeha, Kawanatanga kia kaua a Kawana Kerei e tu hei Mema rao te Paremata mo Hauraki. He mea hoki na aua Pakeha, e he ana tana Pooti ki nga tikanga o te Ture. He mea atu tenei ki te iwi kana taua kupu whakahe a. Te Kawa- natanga mo Kawana Kerei e kiia he tika. E tika ana te mahi a Kawana Rerei, a e kore e roa te mahinga o aua korero whakakahe a Te Kawanatanga, e mutu tata ai i te Paremata. Te kupu tua rua, ko te korero mo te Pooti mo Te Rira, i Turanganui. E kiia ana, e, he mea utu patipati nga kai Pooti, e nga kai mahi rapu rapu ma. Te Rira. A kua tu te mahi, hei wha- | kahe ia Te Hira e kore ai aia e tu hei Mema nao te Paremata. A e kiia ana e kore a Te Hira e tu hei Mema nao te Paremata. Te Tuatoru o nga kupu, he kupu mo Karaitiana Takamoana, a he tino korero enei e paingia e nga iwi Maori, hei titiro ma ratou. E mea ana matou, he take he tenei, kahore kau ona tikanga no te mea kua tae mai nga kupu kia matou a e mea ana aua korero, i tae ano etahi o nga kai Pooti ki Te Kawakawa, a katore kau he mea i kore ai ratou e tae ki reira. £ mea ana matou, ki ta matou whakaaro, he mea ata mahi mari- re tana mahi o Te Kawakawa hei take e tika ai te whakahe kia kore ai e tu te tangata i aia nga Pooti i maha, ara he whakahe mo te tangata e hengia ana e nga whakaaro a Ta Tanara Makarini. Kahore kau a matou whakahe ki te tino Apiha o nga Pooti katoa otiia e mea ana matou, ma tana tino Apiha a whakawa te Apiha mo te Kawakawa ki to te Hoia tu whakawa a me tau tata te he i te he o te mahi i mahi ai nga Apiha iti. Na pea e nia oteranei me mahi he ora mo te mate ki ano i pa mai, i te mea hoki e kore e mohi- otia te putanga o taua mate. He tika ano tenei patai kia utua. Otiia e rere ke a ratou kupu mehemea mo ratou te tangata i tu i te toranga o Karaitiana. E mea pu ara matou ma te Paremata pu ano e ui ni te tika o Karaitiana no te mea, ko te Paremata pu ano te mana hei whakawa i nga mea e puta ana i nga mahi ano o Te Paremata. A ki te mea ka kiia kia Pooti ano te iwi, he pai ano. mo te mea, ka kitea te tangata nana i ngaki te he rao Karaitiana, a me pa he he ki taua tangata i -te mea hoki e rongo ana matou, i nga mahi o etahi tangata Kawanatanga, i nga naahi o taua mahi pooti, a he mea tika kia ui nia taua mahi. A me mutu te tino Kawanatanga, he rawa atu o nga. Kawanatanga katoa i Kawana, ai i nga whenua i kiia he whenua na Te Kuini.

TE WANANGA. The Te Wananga Published every Saturday. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1876. I THE GENERAL ELECTIONS. THE whole of the elections are now over, and the re- i suits are such as must open, the eyes of the supporters of the present corrupt and incapable administration. I Out of the little band of twenty-seven who fought and won against such fearful odds during the last session. only four have failed to be re-elected, and even of | those four one did not offer himself for re-election, thus reducing the actual number of opposition members de- feated to three. Out of the Government following of fifty one members, thirty have either been ignomini- 1 ously defeated, or have wisely refused to stand. The people of this Colony could not have been more outspoken i in the opinion which they have thus expressed, of the i present Government, and of their slavish following in the House, Looking on the names of the defeated Government candidates, we fail to see one whose absence will cause a single regret, now that " his place knows him no more." The entrance of nearly forty new members into the House will be a welcome infu- sion of new blood, and so far as the change has affected i the Government following, it will do something towards raising the calibre of the House, the lowering of which during the last Parliament was so much deplored, by a pare and public spirited morning print of Napier. Whatever may be the issue, whether the Government or the Provinces stand or fall, the whole Colony will be mov- ed, by one common feeling of profound relief at the ab- sence from the Assembly of the Colony, of so many of those members who for years notoriously sought only their own interests, and sacrificed for the most unworthy considerations the interest of their constituents. Of all those upon whom this cruel fate has fallen, none have so richly deserved it as the Maori members of the Govern- ment Wi Parata and Wi Katene. We. well remember their first two years ia Parliament. They outshone the other Native members and friends of the Maori people in the House in the extent of their demands for justice to the Maoris. No sooner had they joined the Government, and tasted the corrupting i sweetness of Government money, than their policy was entirely changed. It was not oven that they became silent, although a feeling of shame might have prompted them to silence, but they became approvers of the worst measures of the Government affecting the Maoris —they became persecutors of their people. The Maoris of their districts have acted like men in rejecting these traitors, and in relegating them back to the privacy of their own pas, where they may have leisure to reflect upon the baseness of their political treachery. Only I three other incidents in the whole of the alections call for special comment. The first is the case of Sir George Grey. He was elected first for a part of Auckland City, and. then stood for, and was returned at the head of the poll for the Thames. The Govern- ment supporters say that Sir George Grey's election for the Thames is contrary to law, and a petition against him ia being presented. Oar readers may make their minds easy however. The course followed by Sir George Grey is strictly constitutional, and Parliament will deal very summarily with, the petition. The second one is that of the election of Captain Read for the European East Coast. In this case, it is alleged that bribery of the most wholesale character was re- sorted to by the agents of the successful candidate. - Proceedings are now being taken to unseat Captain. • Read, and the movers in the matter are confident of success. The last one, and the one which has most interest for our Maori readers is that of Karaitiana Takamoana. Karaitiana was returned at the head of the poll for the Eastern Maori Electoral District, and this, notwithstanding the zealous—we might almost say—frantic exertions of the Native Department. * Now it is sought to set the election aside, on the • ground that no poll was taken at a remote settlement on the East Coast known as Kawakawa. It is alleged that the Returning Officer appointed by Mr. Locke, could not get to the polling place because of the floods, ; but this we regard as a mere subterfuge, because we have proof of the fact that certain friends of the can- didates found no difficulty in getting there. In our i opinion this failure to take the poll at Kawakawa was i deliberately contrived to leave some ground for dispute in the event of the return of a candidate opposed to " Ta Tanara Makarini." We do not blame the principal Returning Officer, but we think that he ought to make enquiry and execute military justice on his defaulting sub- ordinates. It may be asked why should a default be pre- pared for, when no one could tell what the result might be. The answer is plain enough. The question of the validity of this election we believe, may either be settled by the Governor, or referred by him to the House. The Governor means the Ministry, an interested party. They will see the most powerful reasons in favor of invalidating Karaitiana's election, but it would have been different if the name of a true believer had been placed at the head of the poll. We demand that the i question be referred to the House, which is the ancient and lawful judge of all questions affecting its own con- stitution. Then, even if the election be set aside, at least the guilty parties may be got at, and au example made which, according to all we have heard of the be- haviour of Government officials during the recent | elections, i.s very much required. Still, we can afford I to smile at these absurd efforts of the Government to ! make up a majority. All their arts will fail. Their day had gone by. There is an end to insane borrow- ing, to corrupt and extravagant expenditure, to jobs and log-rolling. " Not all the King's horns, and all the King"s men" will be able to put this humpty-dumpty Government back upon its perch. In the very height and plentitude of their power, while re veiling:, with their faithful followers, and feasting on the public revenues and the public lands, the hand of public opinion has writ- ten in letters of fire upon the wall Mene mene tekel pharsin. A change will come, and we hope it will be a complete change. It will not satisfy the outraged feelings of the electors, that the members of the Government only should go out, there must be a complete sweep of all the sycophants and hangers-on who have eaten so much, dirt, and bagged so much public money during the ex- istence of the most dishonest Government which, ever presided over the destiny of one of Her Majesty's Co- lonies.

To THE EDITOR or THE WANANGA. Salutations to you. I forward the following for the in- formation of all your readers. On the morning of the 27th December, at 7 a.m., after the morning meal was cooked and eaten, the people left the settlement and went on to a point of rising ground, from which a view of all the surrounding country could be had ; from which the people could also see the graveyard in which their dead were buried. They saw an European in that sacred place where the dead are laid. Those who saw this man all thought it was like the European called Walker, and at bis side could be seen a coffin. The men at once rushed down from the hill top to capture the European, but the women sat still and wept, some of whom called to the men to kill the European, but those of the women who had knowledge said : no, only capture him, and let him be tried by law. When the rush of people had taken place, the European had vanished from the graveyard, and some said he had hid himself in some of the hollows in the cliff. The men still went on. and found the grave untouched, not a blade of grass or a portion of the soil bad been moved in that graveyard. Some of the people on the hill top said the European had bid himself in the cliff, but after all the cliff sides had been searched that European was not to be found. Some then said it was a spirit risen, others said he was an European risen from the dead, who had been a long time laid in his bed in the earth ; others said it was an angel from heaven, sent to take the child, the body of whom was iu the coffin seen at the side of the aparition. Now, the child spoken of was the only child of his mother, and a beautiful to look on by the eyes of men. Enough from HEMI KOREROHE. Ki TE ETITA o TE WANANGA. Salutations to you. Do yon put this one word in the WANANGA, so that Hone Kotuku may see it. Salutations to you. The first born child of Sir Donald M'Lean, and who has now discovered the ill doings of the false purchase of land, and the flattering language used. Your knowledge is correct, we have seen it all, and are well aware of it. I have seen the colors of our father ever since 1842, and what gave me an insight to our father's motives was his own assumption of being father of the Maori people, and that the Maori was his very child. But in the year 1858, that fester burst on the people of Napier, and in the year 1860 the Waitara matters took place, but I cannot find space to rehearse all the false acts which were seen and took place there at that place. In the year 1871 this fester again became large, and was spoken of under the same of Provinces. This fester had a hundred scores, it is still irritating the body, and now discharges its matter by two separate wounds, which are now called Mangatere- tere and Te Pakiaka. From rae PARAMENA.
