their way to Moananui's pa, adjacent to Clive. If was ihe first day of the Native Tangi, and the curiosity of the Europeans was great to see so large a number as several hundred Natives assembled for feasting, and paying the lust tribute to the departed Chief. The Pakehas were entertained in the most hospitable manner, and every attention possible was shown to them." NATIVE MEETING AT OTAKI. A Native meeting of some importance was held at .Otaki on the 13th of March, ori which occasion. Wi Tako, Maimera, Hapana Turoa, Te Rauhihi and others, addressed the numerous guests, four hundred of whom engaged in a sham-fight. Some of the speeches were very foolish, others highly objectionable, attributable, perhaps, in great measure to the ignorance of the speakers. Some of the Chiefs spoke sen-sibly: we subjoin a few extracts: — ""Let the work of the Runanga be to make dear what is written in the Gospels, so that we may live in peace as the law requires. Let us live in love with our friends the Europeans. This is another word to the Runangas. Let their work be so conducted as to obtain the sanction of Europeans. Let all Runangas be strong and honest, not for-getting that there is One above us who knows all our thoughts; lot their decisions and judgment be correct so that His wrath shall not be provoked, so shall our labours prosper." '* Let us confine our attention to the car-rying out of law and justice among our-i selves. Your remarks [i.e. the extract above] have been heartily approved of by my Runanga." " Let all the roads be thrown open, am mails; do not let this be a cause of further quarrelling."awhio haere ana whaka- te- pa o Te Moananui, e tata ana ki Karaiwi. Ko etahi o nga korero i reira, ehara i le mea pononga; ko etahi nui atu le be, i kawea e le kuaretanga o nga kai whakapuaki. Kia aia Uka ta ratou mahi, kia paingia ai e nga Pakeha. Ko nga Runanga katoa, kia uekaha, kia tika hoki te mahi, kei wareware noa, tenei ano tetahi kei runga e matau ana ki o tatou whakaaro katoa. Ko nga whakaotinga kupu. Ukanga hoki, me nga whakaaro, kia tohunga kia topu; kia ata tika ai a tatou mahi, kei ahu mai ki a tatou tana riri." Ko au korero, [ko nga kupu i runga iho ra,] kua lino whakaaetia e toku Runanga." "Me whakapuare nga huarahi katoa, me te Mera. Kauaka e waiho i ena hei lake e ririri ai ano tatou."
