OUR Native friends will be sorry to hear of the total wreck of the " White Swan," steamer, she having struck on a rock near Waioranga, East Coast of New Zealand, during her passage to Wellington, whither she was conveying Mr. Fox and his colleagues, with other members of the General Assembly. On Saturday, the 28th of June, the steamer left Napier with a light Easterly breeze, the vessel making about ten knots an hour. The acci-dent occurred the following morning as the day was breaking, and about twenty minutes after striking, she grounded, the water in one of the compartments being level with the deck at the time. As the weather was fine, and comparatively little swell on the beach, the passengers, numbering upwards of fifty were safely landed before eleven o'clock, some having lost their luggage, and others their money, to the amount of £1000." MADAGASCAR. They suffered hunger, and thirst, and cold, and nakedness. They hoped to get to the coast and find some vessel to take them to England, or elsewhere. About 16 of these were betrayed by a guide and led back to the Capital, where nine were put to death. The Queen and the heathen parly hoped in this way to frighten the Christians, and so to put down the new religion. They did not know its power. The heathens themselves began to admire the courage and faith of the Christians. Many began to doubt whether the idol wor-ship was right. The Christians that remained we're stronger than ever in their belief. For so has it ever been from the beginning: persecution for Christ's :name makes the Chuch grow It did so in the first days, and does so now. AlI measures were taken to hunt out the Christians. Sometimes spies lurked about their dwellings to betray them to their enemies. Fathers turned against their child-ren, wives against their husbands, slaves against their masters. In all cases the only charge that could be brought against them was, that they prayed to God, not to the idols, and that they read the Bible. One of these prisoners was condemned to die, just before he was put to death ihe Queen sent to him saying, If you will give up your new religion and obey me, your life shall be spared and yon shall have riches and be made great. Many of ihe prisoners were men and women of high rank. Great chiefs who never did any work for themselves, but had many servants. These were sold as slaves. They were sold to hard masters who were made to promise that that they would never set them free. None of the relatives of these suffering people were allowed to redeem them or their child-ren after them out of slavery.
