" Good books are like true friends ; they will never fail us  never cease to instruct— never cloy." ALL the peaceful and well disposed, will be glad to learn that the feud between the chiefs Te Tirarau and Matiu Te Aranui of the Kaipara district, is at an end. Paikea, Manukau and other Kai-para chiefs had an interview with Sir George Grey at Government House on the 11th June, when the propo-sals made by His Excellency regard-ing the settlement of the Kaipara land dispute, were accepted by them on behalf of Matiu and his party; the Governor having promised to visit the scene of hostilities, accom-panied by Waka Nene and other influential chiefs. His Excellency's visit was eminently successful, all parties haying assented to the settle-ment of the dispute by arbitration, in Auckland. The following is an extract from a letter which was despatched by"Ko nga pukapuka papai, e penei ana me nga hoa pono;. te whakarere i a tatou—te mutu te ako— te whakatina." Ko nga tangata rangihumarie, wha-kaaro pai, e koa ina rongo kua oti te whainga a Te Tirarau raua ko Matiu Te Aranui i runga o Kaipara. Ko Paikea, ko Manukau, me era atu rangatira o Kaipara i whakaeke ki te korero ki a Ta Hori Kerei, Kawana, ki to te Kawana whare, i te 11 o nga ra o Hune, a whakaaetia ana i reira nga tikanga o te Kawana mo te whakaotinga paitanga o te pakanga ki Kaipara mo nga whenua, o te taha ia ki a Matiu. I whakaae te Kawana i reira kia haere ia ki te kainga o taua whawhai, ratou ko Te Waka Nene me era atu rangatira whai mana. special messengers to Matiu, request-ing him to withdraw at once from the conflict : —runga i te ringa o nga karere, kia neke ia ki tataki, kia takiwa atu ia i taua pakanga: —
" To Matiu Te Aranui. " Friend Matiu, — Salutations. Friends the chiefs of Ngapuhi, — Salutations. " Friend here am I in Auckland, I have been to the Governor. We two have spoken and the Governor said "let peace be made." * * * When this letter reaches you cease the fighting quickly, * * * and wait for the day when the matter shall be settled by arbitration. This is the word — be affectionate to men, and put up the sword into its sheath. "PAIKEA.""Kia Matiu Te Aranui. " E hoa e Matiu,— " Tena ra ko koe. E hoa ma e nga rangatira o Ngapuhi, tena koutou. * * E hoa, tenei au kei Akarana. Kua tae ahau ki a te Kawana, kua korero maua, kua mea mai ia kia mau te rongo. * * ;Ki te tae atu tenei pukapuka, kia hohoro te tuku i te whawhai ki raro, * * a tatari ki te ra nui o te whakawa. * * Tenei te kupu, kia aroha koe ki te tinana tangata,— kuhua tou hoari ki tona takotoranga. "Na PAIKEA."
— The interview between the Gover-nor and the belligerent chieftains Te Tirarau and Matiu was of a very interesting character. On the ap-proach of His Excellency, at a given signal the flags flying at each pa were simultaneously dipped several times, and finally hauled down. There were other demonstrations of joy, and all the people hailed the Governor as their father, and the friend of Peace*— Ko te whakakitekitenga o te Ka-wana ratou ko nga rangatira o te whawhai, a Te Tirarau raua ko Matiu, nui rawa atu te ahuareka I te haerenga atu o te Kawana, ka tae kei te wahi i whakaritea e nga pa o tetahi o tetahi, rite te tukunga, ri-tenga te hutinga o nga kara, a tetahi a tetahi, e rua, e toru meatanga, ka tino tukua ki raro. On His Excellency's arrival in Auckland he held a conference with the chiefs of the Uriohau, at Govern-ment House, explaining to them the result of his visit to Kaipara; and they expressed their unbounded satisfaction, and trusted that the arbitration proposed by the Governor would be equally satisfactory to all parties concerned,No te taenga mai o te Kawana ki Akarana, ka huihui nga rangatira o te Uriohau ki to te Kawana whare. WITCHCRAFT. We have received a communication from a Native residing at Raglan, signing himself Hakaraia Te Huaki, in which he bitterly complains of the Ngatikotare tribe, of the Ngatitamainu and the Ngatipare, they having threatened to kill him for supposed witch-craft. It would appear from Hakaraia's statement that several deaths occurred recently at Raglan, which the tribes in question accused him of causing by witchcraft. He slates that in February i 862, Ramari and her brother Hapi died ; two others died in March; and subsequently two more named Peu and Te Tahana ai Waipa. On the occasion of Tahana's death, one belonging to the Ngati mahuta tribe said: "If we find this man, who is destroying others (by witchcraft) ail his lauds will be takea as payment." Another Native named Anaru said : " Land is not a sufficient compensation for my dead, I must have the life of a man, then my heart will be at ease." We had hoped that the sunlight of the Gospel had altogether dispersed the super-stitions of olden times which kept the Maori people in continued dread of the gods and of one another ; but we are grieved to find that this is not the case. What, may U be asked, has the Gospel done for the Maori if they believe that one man has power to kill another by witchcraft ? If Hakaraia's state-ment be true, our friends at Raglan and Waipa are fur darker and more wicked than they were supposed to be. Can it be pos-sible that the instructions of Missionaries arid the humanizing intercourse of European settlers daring a long series of years should have so little effect upon the minds of these tribes ?MAKUTU Kua tae mai ki a matou lie pukapuka ha tetahi tangata e noho ana i Whaingaroa, ko Hakaraia Te Huaki tona ingoa.
