THE PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL AND ADMISSION OF NATIVES. THE Daily Telegraph of Wednesday last contains the fol- lowing paragraph :— " A young Maori from Poverty Bay, arrived in Napier on Monday afternoon. His name is Wi Porou, and having been suffering from a severe eye disease for some years, that has rendered hina totally blind, he came here for advice, thinking to obtain admission to the Hospital. He brought letters of introduction to Dr. Spencer. Mr. Woodbine Johnson, of Poverty Bay, we understand, guar- anteed payment of all expenses that might be incurred by the native while in the Hospital. Dr. Spencer ex- amined the eyes of the patient, and expressed the thought that if he could be attended at the Hospital a recovery of eyesight might be secured. Application u as made at the proper quarter for the Maori's admission to the Hos- pital, but the application was refused on the ground we believe, that Wi Porou came from beyond the district Things have come to a pretty pass when the measuring: tape has to be used to discover whether a sightless man can be admitted into a charitable institution, which at this moment is going round with the hat amongst the Maori pahs for subscriptions. How much will the Na- tives of Hawke's Bay give to the Napier Hospital when they learn the case of Wi Porou ?" Wellington Wi Porou. KORERO PAREMATA.
