sullenly looking on ; but they ap-pear to be strenuously exerting themselves for good, advocating the restoration of all lands ceded hereto-fore to Europeans, in consequence of being impressed with a conviction of the justice and good intentions of the ruling powers towards them. " I am not willing that my blood should be shed on European land," says one of the animated speakers, at a meeting held for the purpose of discussing the question relative to the Taranaki settlers re-occupying their farms ; nor "* will I allow myself to be a tool in the hands of the tribes,' said another speaker, who understood that the Governor had made no de-mand which the Maori would not, in all honesty, approve. The Ngatiru anuis and Taranakis have in this matter acted simply as all right minded men should do ; for it must be borne in mind that it is no concern of theirs, as to when or how the settlers are to he put in possession o their farms. It must be owned however, that the conduct of th Natives in this affair is highly praise worthy and will doubtless gain then many friends, who look at things i their true light. The time was, when the Natives e Taranaki and the settlers lived in th bonds of common brotherhood, and • is to be hoped, that the time has com for lay ing aside their differences, an for their union again in interest an heart. The language of both Mao and Pakeha may differ, but the Iaw of kindness cannot ; and its accom panyments, the principles of justic can render their associations peaceful and happy. If the law of mutu hindness be exemplified at Taranaki where recently there was the effer-vessence of distrust, malignity, heart burning, retaliation, and all the otherkatoa o nga Pakeha, kia whakatatu- ria mai ano. elements of deadly war, may it not be reasonably, expected that the same law of mutual kindness, brotherly feeling, and healing influences, will soon prevail throughout New Zealand, WAIKATO THE intelligence from Waikato is calculated to depress the minds of all who are interested in the well being of the Native race. It was supposed that Matutaera, the principal chief of the Waikato, possessed sufficient in-fluence and authority, to suppress anarchy and outrage ; but it would seem, that he has no power to deter his people from committing open violence, nor power to punish them. In vain has Matutaera issued a de-claration commanding that all of-fenders shall be brought to justice — in vain has he stereotyped the motto of his late father Potatau Te Whero-whero, " Religion, Law, Love,'' — the people regard him not, nor do they give heed to the voice of the Runa-ngas summoned at Ngaruawhia to devise plans for the peaceful solution of Maori difficulties. These remarks have been elicited, in consequence of. certain ill advised acts committed by the Ngatimania-poto, the Ngatimahuta, the Ngau-ngau and other tribes of Waikato. The following is a brief account oi the riotous doings to which reference has been made. to procure some of the English goods shipped to New Zealand, he removed with his tribe, six hundred strong, to Kapiti, in Cook's Straits, where he enjoyed personal inter-course with European coasters and traders, a privilege from which he was shut out at bis Waikato settlements. As far as can be ascertained from other Maori occurrences, the deserion of Maungatautari by Taratoa, took place about the year 1828. It must not be supposed, that the endear-ing ties of brotherhood, in these early limes, existed between the tribes of New Zealand; there was a spirit of rivalry amongst ihe various Chieftains, each vying with his neigh-bour in deeds of valour or cruelly. It is no marvel then, to find Taratoa levying an army against his more powerful neighbours the Waikatos, whose host of 10,000 be discom-fited with a band of chosen warriors num-bering sixty, headed by himself and the Ngapuhi Chiefs, Tawaewae and Rango. On the occasion, Pomare Whetoi, the famous Bay of Islands Chief, posted himself with 800 men at some distance from the scene of strife, but their services were not required, for Taratoa and his few followers routed the Waikatos, killing a number of them, and amongst those who fled for their lives were the late Potatau Te Wherowhero, Te Hiakai, Te Kanawa, and Tukorehu;' and amongst the slain were the Chiefs Wharara and Te Pura Nepia Taratoa was the friend of Te Rau-paraha, of Maori renown, who left his set-tlement al Kawhia for Cook's Straits, having in view the same object as Taratoa, which has already been mentioned. There were many displays of personal prowess on the part of our late friend, in his wars with the Ngatikahungunu and other tribes, on which it is unnecessary to dwell ; but though he was so brave, we are informed, he was chiefly distinguished for his unwavering adherence to what he considered to be right. In later limes, his kindliness of disposition manifested itself in various ways, which has endeared his memory to his own country-men and to his European friends. The name of Nepia Taratoa Maukiringntu will long be remembered with feelings of esteem, for he was a firm friend of the old coasters and traders, of the Missionaries, and of the Go-vernment of the country.
